Cooling for my 2500XP

Here I am again to pick ya brains people! :eh: Hope ya dont mind too much!!!

Anyways, I'm looking to change the stock cooling I have on my 'AMD Athlon XP2500 333FSB 512 L2 Cache Barton' (BTW what does the 333FSB mean? As I can only put it up to 200) , which is on a 'Gigabyte GA-7N400-L Socket A NForce2' motherboard.

If you have read my other thread located in AMD mainboard, you'd already know I am getting pretty high temperature readings for my chip (Idle at 51-53°C, and under load goes up to around 60°C). I am not confident with the actual readings from the motherboard as I switched on the pc and the cpu was at 44°C immediately....

Anyway even if the readings arent 100% I am looking to get some better cooling for the chip for around £20-£30 so I can clock it up to 200FSB. Nick has already mentioned the Thermalright SI-97, would I be able to use my stock fan with that? Would there be any point?

What are your suggestions for my pc guys? Again thank you all in advance! ( I received lots of help in the last thread, cheers for that. I can see that you are all eager problem solvers) :worship:

yepp as nick said i would get a Thermalright SI-97 and no you can't use your old fan, you are better off getting a panaflo 92mm fan

Yeah the SI-97 is t3h pwnage!

Get a decent 92mm fan. Quieter, more efficient and far superior airflow that the stock fan mate :o)

Gettin Expensive though. On overclockersuk the heatsynk is £25.79 and I can't find the fan but that'll push it up to £30!

How about the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7? Heard any good things about them? Im also looking at some Zalman coolers. Surely these two options which are more in my price range would allow me to clock from 166 to 200 and keep temperatures slighlty less than they are now???

The Zalman CNPS7000B-CU is quite a nice cooler. Probably not as good as the SI-97, but on the upside it comes with its own fan :)

Your 333FSB is in real terms 166mhz FSB which is what i believe you had your board set to anyway? And as you may have already guessed 200mhz on your motherboard = 400FSB on your chip.

Ah I get you! Sorry I'm a dunce compared to you guys, but I am learning all the time :D

So the 166mhz is just the recommended speed right?

I was tempted witht hat Zalman you just mentioned. seen good reviews on Ebuyer and now I've seen the one with blue LED on Overclockers. In the end it comes to £30 but it looks pretty cool, keeps the pc cool and it's quiet!

just thought id mention mate, when raising the FSB, the northbridge chip on the motherboard can get VERY hot, in fact, in most instaces of a computer crasheing when raising the FSB on an NF2 board, its actually that particular chip thats done it

so, basicaly, you shoudl look into a cooler for the NorthBridge as wel, although dont worry, there fairly cheap

well, you will if your plannign to get 200fsb at any rate ;)

I have an SI-97 on my Athlon XP 3200+ and it is FANTASTIC! The SI-97 is a far better performer than the Zalman copper flower when it comes to cooling....

The Zalman flower really isn't made for overclocking....its made for silent cooling. If you plan to Overclock don't bother with the Zalman. I've owned Thermalright SLK900A, sold it and got the Zalman (cause it looked cooler...big mistake), and then went back and bought the SI-97.....wise move on my part.

Also, if you buy the Zalman...you'll have to pull the motherboard out of the case to put on the brackets....also make sure you've got the 4 holes in the mainboard for the screws to go through right around the CPU socket.

*All Northbridges have a passive heatsink...just not a fan sitting on top of it to help move the air. Thermalright also has the NB-1 chipset heatsink and fan...that sits on my DFI board in replacement of the stock heatsink. :D
