coolant additives

What is current thinking on coolant additives? Should you still not add anything to pure deionised water except more of the same?

And, with that in mind, does anybody know what metal Asus are using for the built-in waterblock on the new "Formula" board?

A decent biocide is always a good idea, anti corrosion is good too. There are some reasonable all in ones but I dont think I would just used Di

I wouldn't run DI without anything else, what if it then gets ions in it from all the different metals, then it's just water. At least put a kill coil in, and biocide.

A silver coil works as a biocide by releasing silver ions into your DI water. Corrosion inhibitor is more important and is usually a biocide anyway. (Ethylene glycol being the most obvious as it is toxic)

If the electronegativity of the metals used in the loop differ you will encounter galvanic corrosion albeit slow if the values are close. (like copper and nickel) You also have to remember that you have brass and tin solder present in most radiators too. Adding silver is just another different metal which will not help matters. Most get away with it as the corrosion is slow. (compared with aluminium & copper)

Isn't there some hoohah about kill coils making your water/tubing go cloudy now?

Personally I'm a fan of Feser One premix, I had one of those in a loop for about 3 years and it never went wrong.. and didn't evap through so, didn't need refilling. When I emptied it, it was just as clean and the colour was exactly the same as before it went in (i had a sample saved)

Oh, I didn't know that about the kill coils, I'm not bothered anyway, I always just use premix coolants :)

I wouldn't state it as fact, it's just what I read when looking for coolant on my last build. I went with mayhems pastel (much to my mistake) and that's all gone to shit now so I've been looking at clear ones again, probably stick to Feser One again tbh :)

I've never used Pastel, but I use Mayhem's X1 Premix, and I think it's great to be honest, I'll probably continue to use it when I next mess with my loop as well

I've read bad things about kill coils too. I just run distilled, plus a biocide / anti-corrosion additive (Dazmode Protector).
