considering air cooling on 4790k

i need something that can compete with the h110. my current choices are nh-d15, dark rock pro3 (with noctua fans), CM V8 GTS (with noctua fans), and thermalright silver arrow (with noctua fans). feel free to suggest the any other coolers just keep in mind ill be overclocking.

Just get the NH-D15 simple. It's unnecessarily costly to buy any other and fit the Noctua fans to it.

my only worry with the nh-d15 is it might cover the beautiful heatsinks on the maximus vii hero and im using a windowed case[750D] (i could change this[730t])

theres only a few coolers thatll cope with the heat that chip spits out
nhd14
nh d15
silver arrow
phtc14pe
be quiets dark rock pro 2 dual tower ect

respectfully my vote is towards the noctuas and phanteks cooler

WARNING!! THE V8 GTS CAN'T FIT ANY OTHER FANS THAN IT'S OWN!!!
The fans are a bit thinner than the standard so people can't use other than the included fans

Agree with the others, Get the best noctua that is available currently the NH-D15, Awesome cooler and you don't need to worry about leaks or pump rattle/malfunction from an AIO :)

the nhd15 is a great choice but be warned depending on how close the cpu socket area is to the first pci x16/2.o/3.0 slot is it might interfere with the cooler..the nhd15 has had a few tweaks done include wider footprint..so it sits even closer to the 1st gpu slot
but remains a great choice
another new comer that does good is the cry-org coolers...their developed by a few elite members from TY/Phanteks and few others who left their respective companies and formed their own and creating the cryorg coolers

considering air cooling on 4790k

You considered wrong hahaha :-)

4790K really isnt hot but the D15 is soooo fat. The CM V8 GTX isnt really that great IMHO - any aircooler will be louder than a AIO watercooler though. Considering your case supports it I really think you should reconsider the aircooling option unless youre not fussed about noise
