Computer problems again!!

Hi guys, I posted while back that during a long session of BF3 that my computer screen was going black and I that I was no long receiving a picture from my graphics card. Now its started happening when I play and game.

Its so so strange. The computer is still on but its as if the gfx card has just turned off. Any ideas?

My gfx card is a MSI 7850 and my board is a MSI Z77a-GD65

Double check all of the connectors from the monitor to the GPU and the power cable to the GPU.

I had a similar thing happen to me and it was a lose active Mini display port.

Is the PSU rated to hang with your system? Is the card getting hot?

I had a similar issue in the past. My card seemingly turned "off" at any sort of load. I found out it was a problem with some power saving features. You might be having the same issue. Try this:

Go to control panel - power options - advanced power settings - PCI Express - Link State Power Management - Change the setting to 'Off'

My first thought, with the screen going black and all, would be some sort of driver issue or, less likely, a hardware problem. On paper your PSU should be 100% fine, though things do get faulty sometimes so it's difficuly to eliminate that without swapping for a know working PSU.

I'd go back to basics and ensure your motherboard (chipset, onboard sound etc.) drivers are all up to date. I don't mean Windows Update up to date, but PROPER "I've checked myself" up to date. I recently had a load of NIC / General network connection issues in W8. However, when I applied the actual latest NIC drivers, rather than the ones W8 thought we latest, all the problems went away.

So, grab the latest Intel Chipset drivers for your board and install them. Do the same for the sound drivers if they are onboard. The same for NIC's, SATA controllers - all the usual bits. Basically an out of date driver for one of the key motherboard items can play havok with stability.

Of course ensuring your GPU drivers are up to date is a good thing to do. Sometimes it's worth totally uninstalling the drivers before updating to ensure a "clean" install, with no left-over settings and the like. That used to be the norm to ensure you avoided issues, but in recent years drivers tend to just work. Still, something isn't right!

It may seem like a bit of a chore going through all the drivers like this -after all, usually the basic Windows drivers and those from Update just work. However, this is preferred to pulling your PC apart, so consider it a Step 1 so to speak.

Best of luck.

Have you tried connecting your monitor to another port on the GPU?
I've had the exact same issue once (like Ironhand), my GPU had a loose connector. Lucky for me I was still able to RMA it.

As BesiX says, going back to basics and checking leads is very worth-while if you've not done so already. If not, why not? Lol.

A friend of mine, after a bit of a panic, found his issue were exactly that, a loose cable that alternated between ok one moment then too lose the next, losing picture.

Things can shift in a PC, especially through the heating / cooling cycle, so checking everything like that is worth-while. Even going as far as ensuring things like your GPU are firmly in the socket, ram too.

Please dont talk to me about PSU issues. I've had 3 corsair ax series psu blow up on me and after changing the psu, motherboard and gfx card I cant believe I have another PSU issue lol

Ouch, that's bad luck. I run a couple of Corsair PSU's and they've been fine so far. Maybe it's time to try a different brand, at least if this one is proven to be at fault.

If you are still having the problems, I can say for certain it is a manufacturing issue, the caps below (or above) the GPU are faulty and can't keep a nice and steady current in some situations. I had a Sapphire 7850, RMAd the junk and got a Gigabyte 7950, which is working just right. Google the problem, you'll see that some very early versions of 7850 from most manufacturers have this issue and it is hardware, there is no way around it. Sorry about that and hope you can still get a replacement without spending more money.

Hello Philib,
I can see that these solutions right here are the most common ones. It is true that you should always go through the very basic stuff before anything else.
There's still one problem that many users are not aware of as it's not the most obvious reason for this kind of behaviour. I had same kind of problem (I guess) on my old PC as well as on my new computer. When I was playing Battlefield Bad Company 2 or Battlefield 3, after like 10-20 minutes, my computer had a black screen and sound was looping. After rather long Googling I found something that solved my issue just like that. I don't remember that page anymore, but the problem was my integrated audio.
It seems that at least Realtek HD Audio has problems with these games on some users whereas some don't have any problems at all. If I remember correctly, I had to go and download the latest driver from Realtek's website. Many people who have had this issue also have stated that installing a descrete soundcard should solve this issue.
Hopefully you get that problem solved if you haven't already. :)

Cheers for all the advice guys. I will be soon formatting everything and starting from scratch. Gonna update EVERYTHING and put my 570 back in. Will let you know of the progress. Thanks
