computer not booting!

Hi all,

I am pulling my hair out & hoping someone can help!

Today my computer shut down with no error messages / blue screen or any kind of warning. It now seems to be in a loop where it cant boot. Cant get to BIOS as it just powers down again; it will then try to boot back up. Its just gets stuck in this loop till you switch the power switch on the back. I should mention it doesn't power down at the same time every time; sometimes it doesn't get as far as the MOBO screen...

I know this is obviously hardware, but I don't know how to figure out what it is; CPU? HDD?

ASUSP5QL pro mobo

Palit GTX260

Corsair HX750

OCZ 4gb 1066 RAM

Not sure what else anyone might want to know, just ask.

If anyone can suggest how I can diagnose, I will be very grateful :)

Gutted. that PSU is brand new! Bought it in Nov and (for reasons too many to list) PC hasn't been used for the last 6 months.

At least I should get it replaced under warranty. thanks for the replies :)

My Corsair HX520w has been perfect for the past 2 and a half years, try a different PSU, if it works see if you can set up a RMA with corsair :)

Hx750s are meant to be rock solid (i have one myself). my limited knowledge makes me think is might be an over heating problem, something is tripping it off? I always thought that PSUs either work or they dont, there is no in between?

Try solutions the are cheapest 1st, maybe re apply some TIM to the processor and re seat the heatsink, give the whole unit a good dust thru, check connection etc, if you have no joy, then look at the more wallet narrowing options

I'd also say the PSU. My build back in 2008 with a Corsair PSU crapped out after a while. It wouldn't let me have my DVD and HDD in at the same time, and if I did, it would refuse to boot... then it died all together.

I would follow the advise of Brooksie. If you have a friend with an extra PSU or if you have one, try it out. Your PSU is more than enough for the system you have. I have the TX750 (2008 model I think, non-modular) and it's good enough for about twice your system.

Also try using only one stick of ram at a time in all slots for each one. I know the general consensus is PSU but it doesn't hurt to try.

Hi all

I tried a different PSU and it worked for a couple of days then stopped booting.

tried the Corsair PSU again and it worked - for 24 hours. Had some advice it may be the thermal compound which wasn't changed when the MOBO was replaced, so have replaced that too. Again worked for 24(ish) hours.

If you check my profile I originally posted on these forums about this machine at the end of last year - and it turned out to be the MOBO (which I obviously upgraded to the current ASUS one). The machine has then sat idle until we decided to give it all another go!

So - my question is; since it doesn't seem to be the PSU & I have had a previous MOBO issue basically since new, is it possible that in fact the CPU has been an issue since the start and has damaged both MOBOs?

Ive been trying lots of tests read from forums & came across a post that talked about faulty CPUs and, although rare, will possibly damage a MOBO, is this true at all? In which case I guess I need to RMA the MOBO & buy a new CPU?

Ultimately the CPU (and the HDD & optical drives but doubt anything to do with these?) is the only remaining component since the original system I bought...

thanks for all your help so far!
