Cold Bug???

Alright mates.

Finally got an opteron 146

Installed prometeia

--> ''please enter system disk''

Ok, so I reboot --> pc freezes when loading bios

So I took out all sata drives, and pc booted correctly.

Next step:

I tried the SIL sata ports of my SLI-DR, my 36gb raptor boots with the SIL port, but only marvell inet works, nvidia internet doesn't work

I tried the SIL sata port with my 74 raptor and I get a BSOD

Really don't know what to do any more...

Now I'm back to air, and everything seems to be working fine.

Is this a so called cold bug? I thought the pc doesn't boot at all with a cold bug.

Sounds like it mate one of the pitfalls of Opterons I am afraid - get urself a clawhammer or SD FX55 for Phase and you'll be very pleased with the result ;)

hehe that's not a bad idea Fatty :B

Funny enough, I've been reading up on the coldbug issues that ppl have been having and some strange information has come up.

On the FX's it seemed that come with poor IHS contact (internally) actually did a lot better than other's when looking at LN2 or Dry Ice setups for cold issues.

When I went 'shirtless' on my old FX-55 I cod the coldbug right away, but when I used armaflex tape as the 'shim' covering the resistors on the cpu around the core, that coldbug went away.

Obviously some seem to have mem controller issues at very low temps, but at the same time, it makes me wonder if some of them tend to draw so much heat from the SMR's that it's where the problem can be coming from as well.

I suppose the only way to test that is to r&r the ihs, ensure good thermal contact with the core, but to insulate the SMR's a little with something like armaflex, and refit the works, perhaps that could help reduce the issues.

A lot of work just to confirm that it's just a bugged cpu, but presents an interesting challenge.

It's quite likely that it just is a mem controlller issue at low temps, it normally is, but some have tried a 'shim' in between the evap and the IHS to reduce thermal efficiency and raise core temps a little with good success, and a 3mm copper shim or something like that would be pretty easy to put together if you could get the evap to remount :)

You just need to lend me your cascade so I can test my fx57 for the cold bug or I need a pair of rotary's

lol I already told ya you can use it, you just need to come up here and get it! Imagine THAT on the back of your motorbike :D

Well I haven't heard anything from the other guy who was so desperate for the rotaries either so there shouldn't be a problem to get 'em to ya :) I feel too guilty not giving 'em to ya anyways, it's a crime not to supercool that '57 of yours.

I'm probably gonna get yelled at when he finds out tho

I just wish I could get some more, I've got so many ideas for them, and so few of them, that the fun's not gonna last me nearly as long as I'd like!

You're lucky you've got a chip that's not coldbugged though Fats :) There's nothing worse than knowing you've got a good chip that does amazing things on air and water, only to find out that phase is just too cold for it :(

Will have to get some PM'ing going on that, and now I've got to box 'em back up too :p all this hard work you're makin' me do! hehe
