Close contact, high pressure between Prommy head and CPU

With my Mach II ST I get -35 idle and -27 load 1.7v @4GHz.

Shame I don't have a thermal probe that goes negative as these seem extra low. I have tested before with positive temps and it is always within 1-2ºC of the probe.

Anyhow you can tell if you have a good contact by the ceramic paste imprint on the head surely?

i am sure your load will drop to like -20C or -18C if youre using the P4C800E...

Have you tried to stress your cpu to its max?

Hello to everyone.

I had similar contact problems with a P4 head when I first got the Mach II, Phil you may remember me posting this at ocuk some time back, no amount of adjustments helped so I resorted to a small mod similar to the tie rap thing, I went to a local hobby shop and bought some thin plastic card, they sell it in different thickneses from 3mm down to 0.5mm, I just cut small bits off and placed them in the slots of the mounting head using seal string to hold them in place, cant explain very well so I have made a picture of it, now temps are -36 under load on a P4c800 and 2.4c :D

hehe I do remember mate, nice to see you on these boards too. Can you remember that pic you sent me of the modified CM Mach 1 - can you post it on the rigs section - I think some people would like to see it. :)

Yeah I just tested again got -22ºC after an hours 100% load from sandra, ambient was 25ºC (Dam GF still thinks its cold????). Idle was -32ºC.

It's quite possible my -27ºC was in a sub 20ºC room though.

what about running prime and a game together?

Does that drop your temps any lower...

perhaps i was getting better contact thus dropping my load temps to - 18C...

you temps are great mate :)

Found the guide too.

Is my prommy sposed to come straight on when I plug the mains into it? There isn't an 'on' switch as such but I thought it should turn itself on when I hit the case pwr on (which is connected up via prommy etc etc).

I've even tried unplugged everything, bar the freezer head and as soon as it's got juice in the back of it it roars to life.

When you plug the mains into the Mach II you get the display come to life - thats it until you connect the computer to it - I dont know whether you have an ST or a normal Mach II. If you've a normal Mach II and it actually fires up without any interferance at all then it sounds like you need to update the firmware.

Let me know what unit you have.

Will try it when I get a new GFX card, not sure I have anything for the current 16MB thing I have in there.

Well, I followed the guide, sanded the plastic stand offs down another 1mm or so, then cut pieces of cable ties inside the lugs and clip, which held it pretty securely.

Put it all back together, there's a marked improvement.

At default, my temps only go down to -14C now, best temp was -24C idle.

Unfortunately, at 3.7GHz/1.85v dual prime brings me back to +4C. Still don't appear to be getting as good as I should be. I can't even boot windows at 3.9GHz.

Next time, I'm gonna sand the stand off completely off and that should fking do it!

I sanded them completely off now. filed out any transister/mosfet/fuse bumps.

it's now worse than before and to top it all off, one of the alan bolt heads has snapped in the head, so I cant take it off any more.

How much is a new intel kit? :)

(f**king thing!)

Side note: anyone else have an IC7-MAX3 + mach2?

Thanks for the link shane. Oddly enough, that dood has an almost identical setup to myself. Not sure how this helps me tho. My Mach2 is an ST however, so I can't see what the evap temps are. I'm pretty sure there is no problem with the unit itself, just the mounting, which will be the death of me.

What problems did you run into Phil? If you could elaborate, anything might help me. I've wanted to throw my entire rig out of the window several times today :(
