Choosing a Power Supply

Have been wondering why someone says that this 420w psu is better that this 550w psu? Well, its because psu's are not always about wattage. Its based on two things: 1) Amperage and 2) Name Brand. Amperage is most important because it can run alot more devices on that rail. Lets say that your Panaflo High Speed needs .25A on the 12v. All thoes amps that a device needs start to add up very fast. What you want to look for is around 30A on the 12v. Name brand is also important. An OCZ Powerstream 420w is alot better than a Powmax 500w. Powmax is a no-name brand.

Here is the rail ratings on a X-Connect psu.

As you can see, it has 34A on the 12v rail, which is real good.

Also, you might have heard about dual rails. Dual rails are real good, but only on the expensive ones like the Powerstream 600w. Thats what fugger uses on his 7.2Ghz comp.

Here are some good psu's (not in order). I will also add linkies.

1) OCZ Powerstream 520w

2) OCZ Powerstream 420w

3) Ultra X-Connect 500w

4) Fortron 530w

5) PC Power and Cooling 510w

6) Antec Neopower 480w

7) Enermax Noisetaker 600w

8) Antec Truecontrol 550w

9) Thermaltake Butterfly

10) Hiper TypeR 480W

11) Tagan 480W

Good guide. I'll sticky that one. ;)

Mostreams are OK, but no where near the quality and stability of the Powerstreams. if you do get a Modstrema, make sure its the 500w version ;)

Still missin 2 PSUs off the list

1) Hiper TypeR 480W is the best cheap PSU ever

2) Tagan 480W (ignore xms :) ) is rated very highly

Yes, i retract my statment about the Tagan. After seeing all the Other DFI boards die in pretty much the same way, i think its safe to say it wasn't the PSU's fault.

Which means Tagan once again get my 'thumbs up'. The PSU was rock solid and provided an exact 12.0v even under load.

i give the modstream the thumbsdown it gave way to much voltage fluctuation for my likeing

you might want to add the OCZ Powerstream 600w,zippy 700w and definitely take that thermaltake of the list

Let's not forget the Forton Blue Storm 500w :)

Oh yeah, and the uber 1337 psu of the century goes to..........

The PCP&C 850w ETX SSI

not everyone has THAT kind of money ;)

I'd heard some bad things about PSU's with twin rails (don't really understand difference between single and twin) but decided to get Antec Neopwer 480w - very easy to install and has worked faultlessly. Great piece of kit!

Antec doesnt make a bad power supply, they come highly regarded as a good solid stock level performer, not really the tweaker / overclockers choice however.
