Im lookin to spray my first case for my project maxd case and im wondering whats the best way to prep the case for the primer? I havnt got access to a sandblaster so whats the best sandpaper grit to get a nice base ready for priming?? Ive got loads of 80grit in the house:rolleyes:

Cheers all help much appreciated:p

I would think anything over 1000 grid just to make it rough without leaving any scratches to the metal..

Ive found acrylic car paint to be good, and pretty cheap, mind you i went to a local(?)(lol 30 mins drive + getting lost) paint shop and got it mixed up for me.

I think it was ~20 quid for 1L and 2L of thinner(smallest they had), that needed a 1:1 mix of thinner and paint.

End result:

Halfords paint is like water so forget that. Find yourself a decent supplier to the trade and buy from there. Warning with alu though, you do HAVE to use etch primer and then a normal primer over the top. Etch is very nasty stuff and will play havoc with your lungs, so not only wair a mask but do it some where with VERY good ventilation.

cheers for the pdf really helped. Im planning on spraying in my back garden hopefully so im getting the mask and goggles as soon as i can. I think i dont have any local paint shops so chester looks like the best bet.

Cheers for all advice guys :D

That paint looks well worth the effort:eek:. How long did the whole job take??

primer friday evening, multiple coats on sat, finishing touches on sun.

if your doing it in your garden watch out as dirt particles/bugs/leaves can hit it, and cause you to have to take it down a little on that area (more work), found that out painting my bike. (bright yellow was like a bug zapper to the sods)

I wouldn't recommend spraying in the garden tbh. Even on the calmest of days you do get a breeze which will play havoc with getting an even spray on your surfaces. Also as others have pointed out, flies, dust and other annoying particles WILL find their way on to your wet paint no matter what you do.

If you're concerned about the finish I'd do it in the garage (of you've got one). Maybe put up a few dust sheets too as even in there you'll get airbourne particles wanting to spoil your paint party.

Back a looong time ago when I sprayed my CM stacker I did the whole job in my kitchen. Just put down a load of dust sheets on all surfaces. Had to wear a mask tho as I couldn't even have the back door open without it affecting the spray direction. Was deffo worth it in the end :D

For the etch prime dust wont matter, you can flat it back before applying the normal primer. Etch is deffo the thing I would warn you about the most mate, I still think that was the reason I was so ill a while back.

I have since invested in a proper fresh air fed mask that I use both at home and the body shop now.

no idea mate, my grandad had the gun and the compressor. Have a look on ebay, might be able to get one fairly cheap just make sure it gives out a constant presure, as if it changes up or down to much you get an un even coat.
