Can I reseat CPU cooler and not change thermal paste?

I have a Corsair H100i where the "cooler head" (the one placed onto the CPU itself) which has the uplit Corsair Logo is placed sideways. Im getting a new chassis and will then be able to place it so that the logo is upright (yay).

So my question is; will it do any bad if I quickly remove the cooler head from the CPU, turn it 90 degrees and place it right back? I changed the paste when I first got it about 2 months ago, so its relatively new paste.

It's always recommended to redo the paste. All you can really do is try and watch your temps. If they go up, redo the paste.

From personal experience I wouldn't advise it as you will get trapped bubbles/air etc..., Best and safest bet is to clean of the compound from both heat sink and CPU and start fresh to avoid any problems :)

Nope... Always change the paste before reseating as you will have disturbed the paste currently on there and well... just best to clean & apply new.

this
i bet you have some paste laying around somewhere and it doesn't really take long

I wouldnt mind changing it if I was positive I had enough. I have 2 tiny tubes of Zalman paste but I have absolutely no idea if they are on the verge of being empty or still have some drops left...

The other I have is one tube of Arctic Silver 5, again there is no way to tell how much is left (I pushed it to the very end but there seems to be coming some out from just tapping it gently, so maybe theres more than I think)

I guess mixing them would be a bad idea?

Do not mix them ;) Thermal paste isn't that expensive...

well you're ordering a new case anyway. doesn't the same retailer also happen to sell some thermal paste?

Sure, but I already ordered it. I didnt think about it till now. :(

So the question is: are you willing to pay £10 for the safety or your cpu (in terms of temps)?

Ofc, but I already spend more than I wanted to. I was meant to get a 2500k with a basic motherboard, basic DDR3 ram, a 770 and the same chassis. Ended up with a 3570k, a brand new GB motherboard, 8GB Corsair ram, and a 780. All going into a brand new chassis and even bought a fan controller...

Im way past my "budget", and wanted to save where I could. To begin with im gonna hope I have enough in the tubes I have lying. If I dont its my own fault and I'll take the punishment of having to wait for new to arrive. Crossing my fingers...

Well good luck with that! Just don't mix them :P

would you really cut a £10 corner just so you don't have to clean the TIM?
Could be costly.

just order some and it's done then you know you have a new tube and you can store it properly etc.

you should *always* use new paste dude c'mon, don't cut a silly corner and end up wasting money.

Been looking on various thermal pastes (theres so many!) and the fair priced one I can get here is the one from Noctua. Theres also some liquid metal (from Coolaboratory) but honestly I wouldnt feel safe using that, I'd rather just stick to regular paste.

Noctua paste is about £10 with shipping, and should perform on the same level as the AS5, but without the 200 hour "break in period".
