This question is asked very often, the simple answer is that it depends what kind of motherboard you are using.

Proprietary Computer manufacturers such as Dell, HP, Compaq, Gateway, IBM and most manufacturers use Intel motherboards that have the necessary BIOS options locked. For those users there is always hope, you can try using software overclocking programs, they do not work as good but can give you a boost.

One of the best software overclocking programs is Clockgen

If you are using a custom built computer and do not know if your motherboard has the required options, please download CPU-Z and post its output on this forum to enable us to help you.

Yep, BIOS is the best place to overclock from.

However, if you have a motherboard that doesnt have the options, or you're attempting the new world record, and need to set insane fsb speeds, then clockgen is probably the best software you can use :yumyum:

The funny thing is that you actually need to buy some quality stuff to do good stable long lasting ocs. There are cheaper way outs though. Overall, if you know what you're doing it's better to oc cheaper cpus than pay mega$ for some of those high grade ones.

Oc

heh if you a flippin newb and set things to high, your toast just make sure u know exactly your doing :) then you should be allright or ugh oh! :yumyum: :yumyum:

Yeah, time is a factor dont take huge steps start off small and tweak the little bits, do not go into the extreme until you have the 1. Knowledge 2. Proper tools 3. If you have a friend that has more experience maybe you will want him present!

For the proper tools, make sure you have a very good mobo and PSU other than that if you know what your doing have fun and happy oc'ing

it will be the bottleneck eventually, but nowhere near first for me so i dont bother. if it got to the time when i needed to spend £100 on a psu to get an extra 50MHZ then i wdnt bother, i wd call it quits ;)
