care to explain why and show a pic of these? :)

of which? well the Canon as its a good camera, but mainly for a good photgrapher.

Generally looks like this -
canon_eos_350d.jpg

Although they seem to be far more expensive at the moment than when I got mine :\ probably due to it being Christmas.

I would say a Sony is good, as they are always very good quality, and are good for beginners, as well as taking good shots.

It really comes down to the price range.

Well depending on the price range and what she would prefer, something like an Olympus mju mini might be ideal, otherwise I would recommend a Sony CyberShot.

i think it's between these 2 now. these people aren't easy to reason with.. they have ipods  ipod nano's w/ engraving..... how do i survive?:(

I'd vote for the canon.

Great picture quality. I've got an A80 and girlfriend's parents have an IXUS and the photos from both of them are great.

Canon all the way! I have an old Powershot A60 (2Mp) and a EOS digital SLR (13Mp), they are both peaches of cameras to use - easy and reliable.

The A60 was my first Canon as I'd always had Pentax and Nikon and just got it as it was only £99 and believe me it owes me nothing, it's a bit bulkier than a lot of newer pocket cameras but wtf the results for 2Mp are good.

I quite fancy the pentax optio range as they are very slim and small with loads of features and the price has come down a lot recently.

I think the main rule to follow is buy a camera from a well known camera manufacturer. Companies like Canon, Fuji, Olmpus etc. A good lens counts way more than the megapixels.

I've got a Fuji Finepix and a relatives got a Canon Powershot. Both are nice.
