Building new rig (Any advice will be appreciated)

Hi guys. I wanted get some advice from people who really know what they are taking about. Before i start buying parts and do somthing stupid

And what i want to know is. are the parts i have listed compatible each other and with my parts and is my old power supplier good enough.

If you can squeeze in an SSD, I dont see anything 'wrong' (might be a bad word to use) with that build....

To free up some funds, go for 8gb instead of 16gb for ram, currently 8gb is enough for gaming, and you can always add ram at a later time.

Please say that you removed the video card before you packaged it up and sent it..everything else inside a case is fairly secure but the video card is held in by 1(or2) case screws and the pci lane....

Saying that though, if airport personel mis-handled the luggage (....or thrown) to the point that the case was dented its not surprising that you've got now faulty parts.

As Mathius said, an SSD would be nice. Preferably 120GB but even a 60GB one will do just for your OS and a few applications. You'll see dramatic speed increases when it comes to booting, starting and loading times.

I also agree that you don't need 16GB for gaming. 8GB will be more than plenty and most current games don't even use more than 4GB at this point in time.

The CPU is quick, but can run really hot. The stock cooler just won't do it, unless you don't mind it sounding like a jet engine and still running hot. I'd recommend an aftermarket CPU cooler. Something like the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo doesn't break the bank and performs really well. It's a personal favourite of mine and apparently also this forum. It's pretty much the best out there for the price

The video card is good, but I'm really OCD when it comes down to colour scheme so if I had the money for it, I'd personally swap the card out for a GTX 770 Gaming to suit the colour scheme. Speed-wise it won't matter much but the GTX 770 is a bit newer. That Blue PCB on the AMD card would just drive me nuts.

Sapphire is a really good brand though, and the HD 7970 is an epic card for the price, so as said, this would only be colour scheme related.

Your PSU will offer more than enough juice for those components. Should even be able to toss in another GPU if you really want to. How did you manage to get a coffee stain on there though? ' Probably says '80 plus' though.

The point Mathius made about removing the GPU in transport is a really good one. This is also the case with big CPU heatsinks though. Do you need to transport your system very often? If yes, then what about a somewhat smaller form factor rig?

Both Mathius and Feronix are spot on with the 8 gb downgrade, should save you a little extra cash for other things like cpu cooler or a ssd. Im currently planning a upgrade and going to be using the MSI GTX 770 Gaming for my gaming needs.
Have you also thought about switching from the i7 down to the i5, would still give you a mid to high end gaming rig but would free up a little more extra cash without much drop in perfomance ?

I didn't remove the graphics card. i had totally forgotten about it I had other thing's on my mind at that time. But it does not matter i had plans to upgrade my PC this year anyways. but didn't expect it to be this soon.

And the coffee stain is not on the PSU it self. its on the shipment paper just to clarify :lol:

But back to the topic. I'm gonna go for 8gb instead of 16gb like you guys said. And i found a new ram set thats a bit cheaper Kingston DDR3 HyperX Beast 8GB. And the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU. But i can't afford the SSD. And i will go with the HD 7970 since its cheaper than GTX 770.

Btw i only move my PC once every year. So i don't really need a smaller case.

I did not think of that. But what kind of i5 do you recommend than?

Good to see you go for an aftermarket CPU cooler. It will be much more silent and also keep your CPU nice and cool The link is broken though. It really is a shame that you cannot fit an SSD, but maybe that's something for a future upgrade? Will have to re-install your OS though.

Be very careful with transport next time. Mail and airport people don't know much about computers, let alone how fragile they can be. And honestly they probably don't care very much either. Better be safe than sorry and take the GPU out/ CPU heatsink off.

As for the CPU, the i5 4670k is the i5 equivalent to the 4770k. The only difference is that it's clocked 100MHz lower (though both are easily overclockable) and it does not have Hyperthreading. There's a catch though.

Because current consoles don't have many cores they were holding back development. Currently, there are barely any games out there that use more than 4 cores (like an i5 has). With the next-gen consoles with 8 cores though, we might see change in this and you may be better off with the i7. Hyperthreading is basically when the amount of cores is virtually doubled within the operation system of your machine:

At this point in time, there's very little performance increase from an i5 to an i7 if any at all. This might be very different in a year or two though, so that's for you to decide

Apologies if this is too late but......

I've been searching for the same sorta answers regarding the SSD, I had the chance of a big steal for one of these.......I couldnt tell which was better, and decided to go with none.

I'm not sure of the validity of this norway site, but the Sandisk SSD is a pretty good one, its usually suggested along side the Samsung 840 SSD so....

Personally, I wouldn't get any RAM that is above 1.5v, i know that XMP prolfile sorts out the best settings and such, but still.....

I had a quick browse through that site (komplett.no) and came accross these:
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz 8GB CL9 ( 2x4GB ) for a Gaming rig, 1600mhz is a sweet spot, I doubt you will notice much of a performance gain in gaming if you went faster......
