Building new Gaming PC

Hi, I'm new to the forums, from Toronto Canada here. I woke up the other day and wanted to build a new computer.

The one I have now I built on a budget 4 years ago so time for something better.

I already bought some parts and need some advice on others.

It will be on some what of a budget.

I have so far:

Motherboard: ASUS Rampage 3 Gene X58 $215 CDN

Hard drives: Kingston SSDNow SSD 64GB $80 CDN

Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB $70 CDN

Hitachi 500 GB (old)

Monitor: SyncMaster 206BW 20inch 2ms $50 (bought off friend who had it new in box growing dust for a year or so)

Video Card: EVGA Geforce GTS 450 $120 (using now)

I might want to add a 2nd video card after building.

(also bought Logitech G9 Laser mouse and G15 Keyboard)

The parts I want to buy next:

Chip: Intel i7 950 $315 CDN (man this price hurts)

RAM: Mushkin Redline 6GB RAM 3 channel 1600 $175 CDN

HeatSync: Noctua NH-D14 $100 CDN (this price hurts too but my room gets hot)

I Need suggestions on a proper Power Supply and a Case, the motherboard is micro ATX so I wouldn't mind using a mid size or smaller case, or just any good case preferably under $160 CDN or US.

Thanks for any advice and help.

Case wise xigmatek utgard are a good choice, i like the look of nzxt vulcan as well but its generally what you like in a case

psu any corsair or nzxt ones are a good choice

Case wise look at good air flow cases in your price range and ones with dust filters, I have a coolermaster haf 922 which has great airflow but no filters, so would consider the fractal design R3 which also comes in many colours to suit your requirements, I have two PC's and both use Corsair power supplies which I rate very highly.

Lancool K62R1, filters, good airflow and an awesome interior paint job. For the power supply you'll probably be looking at around 700-800w if your overclocking. Brands I would go for are Corsair, Seasonic, Enermax maybe Coolermaster.

Thanks guys, I like Zeals suggestion on the Lancool K62R1, the red and black matches the R3G motherboard / ram color and it looks amazing.

I found a store here (NCIX) selling it for $140 here.

Now I'm going to look for a power supply.

Corsair TX series power supplies are very good at a reasonable pricepoint. If you want it modular look at their HX and AX series. NZXT, Seasonic and Enermax also do make some great power supplies.

Hi, I'm also going to be overclocking my RAM and CPU and Video card, so I'm just trying to figure out how many watt power supply I may need, I'm hoping 750w will be enough.

Lian li has some good cases that appeal to the htpc crowd. All are alumn and good quality build. I like this lian case. If you prefer a more budget case I personally like the nzxt brand and recently i bought a m59 case off new egg for 40 bucks for my folding build.

As for psu i would consider a 500w with your set up above and go with brands such as corsair tx or builder series.

Get a Corsair HX-750, semi-modular, so no too much cable clutter, 80+ Silver (apparently borderline gold), Corsair warranty and it's pretty bulletproof. And due to efficiency it will pay itself on in electricity savings =D. Also I'm fairly confident the 750W will meet all your power needs.

EDIT: I just checked the pricings at NCIX, probably go for a Corsair AX750 if you willing to wait for more stock, otherwise get the HX-750. You could get the OCZ Fatality 750w, flip it the other way around, so you get to see a nice cool red fan which should go well with the case.

EDIT: I have the Lancool case and it's epic =D

Thanks, You guys really helped me make these decisions.

I was taking a look at the Corsairs and OCZ Fatality 750w power supply's and I like the OCZ Fatality's Red and black color and $100 CDN price but I'm worried about the quality and reliability of it compared to the Corair power supply's which are $60-$80 more than the OCZ.

Going with the OCz will help the save extra money but im reading up on it.

i can honestly say i have expierence with both the lancool k62 and the xigmatek utgard both exceptional case and both can hold rads(lancool 280mm rad)(xigmatek 240mm or 280mm rad and single 120mm rad internal aswell)(in my avater is a 120 feser exchanger internal mount push pull)

overall thou i would go with the lancool nice size, roomy, cable managment etc.

Nice, Thanks for the all the help.

I checked out all the cases and power supply's and I'm ordering the LanCool K62R1 and buying the OCZ Fatality 750w power supply, I'll have my system set up and done in about 5-6 weeks, I'll post pics or video of what it looks when its done.

Thanks.

I don't like fatality stuff. The gamer guy himself doesn't seem to be too on the bright side

. Great at games sure...thats about it probably. I love corsair stuff. Usually all black.

Well I was more attracted to the cheaper price, found a place selling them for $110, but I don't want anything unreliable, the red light was just a extra for me.

I'll put the the money out for the Corsair HX Series 750HX

unless i can find something better.

I'm also looking at a Antec DF-85 Dark Fleet case.

If you haven't bought the PSU yet, maybe the Mushkin Joule that TTL looked at on youtube with the 3 fan colours, including red which will go nicely with the ROG theme

Video Card: EVGA Geforce GTS 450 $120 (using now)

I might want to add a 2nd video card after building.

Hate to sound like a parrot, but..

Just buying the fastest gpu card, sticking it in your old/existing rig, and forgetting about all the other new components, will give you the better gaming rig immediately.

I know it sounds like a scratched record, but I understand people wanting to shell out cash for a great cpu/mobo/ram setup and putting an existing or new lower end graphics card in it - possibly with the intention of adding to it later, chances are tho they stick with the graphics card and have little in-game improvement.

Buying/building a rig, for a gaming pc, imo, most of your cash should go to the gfxcard.

And an X58 system for a new gaming pc, and stick with a 450 ? If it's games, a cheaper chipset and a top end gfxcard would laugh at it, gaming wize.

Have you bought the CPU, Mobo, etc.?

If not, I'd go for a MSi P67A-GD65 with an i5-2500k. Faster.. and you'd even have more money for a gfx card
