Budget Gaming Rig

Hi Folks

I've have narrowed down these products to create a budget gaming machine. Are they a good combination and if they're not what could be done to make it better. I'm on a budget of £450 and planning to buy everything from scan or any other good retailer.

Please don't be harsh, I suck at hardware and have been told to come to the great 'Overclock3d' forums

Thanks in advance

People might be able to advise you better though if you put prices next to the parts.

Aria do some good bundles, one of them based around a 955, that might be of better value or get you a little more for your money than buying it all from scan but you'd need to take a look. Here's the link http://www.aria.co.uk/Systems/Bundles/

Hope this is of some help,

Thanks for the reply

Hi sorry to sound like a dumb ass but the i3 540 only has 2 cores, the amd 955 has 4, if you have more cores doesn't it mean its faster.

No, it means it has more cores to do the work. The i3 540 is actually faster than the 955.

But it really depends on how many cores the games you play use. For games that only use 2 cores then the I3 will be better where games that take advantage from any extra cores may favour the 955.

Really though it's the graphics card you need to focus on in a gaming rig as it's that that's going to do most the work.

Samsung 1Tb Spinpoint F3 Hard Drive - HDD : Perfectly good, Seagate are my preference but I've heard Samsung F3s are good drives anyway.

Hypertec 2GB DDR3 1333 Mhz CAS 9 Single Channel Desktop Memory : 4GB is often the norm for a gaming build, you can get 4GB Mushkin Silverline from Aria for £29.

MSI GTX460 OC NVIDIA Graphics Card - 1GB : An older card but as this is on a tight budget it'll do.

Coolermaster Elite 430 Black Computer Chassis with 500W PSU : Case is good for a budget, PSU isn't. Coolermaster AFAIK are not a reliable PSU brand, you could get a 520W Seasonic from Aria for £63 or £70 Modular.

AMD CPU Phenom II 955 Black Edition Quad Core Processor : Perfectly good CPU for gaming, as others have said the i3 isn't a bad choice but you can't overclock unless you got 1156. What Karlos said about the bundles as well, OC3D have reviewed a couple which have both been good and with most you get a guaranteed overclock.

Asus M4A88T-M AMD 880G AM3 Motherboard : Dunno a lot about AMD motherboards.

SATA DVDRW IHAS122-18 LiteOn : It's a DVD burner, therefore it's OK.

This is from scan as you suggested, I´m not from UK so not sure where the best bundles are. but this is what i came up with, it has more RAM, better GFX, can be upgraded to buldozer AM3+, cut down on HDD space its easy to upgrade later, also if u have a collection i guess its already stored so just chug that drive in the build. Also since mobo is M-ATX i would change to a fractal design core 1000 case, it should be available very soon at scan. Its around the same price range.

Fractal can be seen here

Also if you all worry the PSU is made by FSP, a respected brand as can be seen here.
