BT's New Broadband Blocked

Plus they caused a nuisance to wheel chair users, WTF

Come on the UK is so behind the times. BT are actually doing something good for once with these trials and they get stopped from improving communication links by such trivialities

ED

I wouldn't say causing problems disabled access a triviality! ( i assume with that comment you are abled bodied? )

Agreed we are behind the times but.....

I just couldnt see how a cabinet would suddenly cause an issue.

We have call boxes / traffic light control boxes / bins / lamp posts / curbs / benches / fences / railings / etc already existing all over our streets.

Unless BT placed these in the center of the pavements how these new editions suddenly made the streets impassable.

I am in no way taking a dig at anybody mate

ED

It doesn't state if they are deeper (stick out into pavement more) but thats the only way they could cause problems, unless its in front of your window.

Tracked a picture of the box down too, not quite 1.8m either is it?

Those cabinets are the same as the ones i used to install for NTL now Virgin,

there were objections years ago when they were installed in the "leafy suburbs" never had complaints from the towns.

I worked in Windsor for a time and we actually had protesters sat where we were to install them! Was interesting to say the least.

Usually there are public notifications of intent stuck to lampposts and in the local free rags when street furniture or if any change of access is to be undertaken, often overlooked and if there are no objections then the local council grants permission to proceed.

I don't think for one minute that BT, or any other communications supplier would go ahead at their own discretion and begin installations without prior consent.

They can get taller as they usually install what is known as a "Top hat" to prevent the local riff raff from sitting on them, this adds about another 500mm to the top and is more peaked.

The foundations for these can be quite substantial, designed for vehicle impacts etc. but when i installed them, they were never allowed to infringe on minimum distances and restrict public access be it wheelchairs or pushchairs/prams. ( if memory serves me right I think its 1.2m width )

That's the shortest 1.8m I've ever seen.

Dunno about you guys, I wouldn't care if it was 2000ft high if it meant 40mb broadband (assuming a comparible upload speed)

1.8m is a good 6ft,

Now that's one big cabinet, know I wouldn't want one stuck outside my house. ( well perhaps against the west wing as I rarely venture that far into the house, that's where the servants reside :p )

Jeez, they'll be covered in graffiti b4 too long, so the look will change :p

But yeah there are bigger ones at larger populated areas. 1.8m cabinets I'm not sure about, seems a bit tall for maintenance for me. Wider ones I could appreciate. But I thought they were bound by edicts on how much they stand out anyway.

Biggest problem I got with this article is "spokeswomen" - wtf. Spokesman is what it is. The same people don't call managers "womanagers" they call them manageresses ffs. Spokesmaness ? nah it don't sound right do it. Womanager almost sounds racist.

Bah, sort ur house out BT. Aslong as the kit worked, I'd care less myself.

I wouldn't mind. When you have superfast internet there's no reason to go outside! :D

They seem very similar to the present boxes we have here, I really don't see the problem.

BT, If you can give me speedy netz for free there is some space in the corner of my living room for one of these :p
