I'm currently...well trying to...format a pc I was given to repair, but when I go to install windows it formats ok but when it is copying over the setup files it just hits a BSOD.

I've tried different RAM slots, different sticks of RAM and the same happens each time.

Any ideas?

try formating with only the mobo / cpu / 1 stick ram / 1 hd on the rig. the error mostly happens with ram problem really. also try reseting your mobo (taking of its batery for some time).

another question, is the pc old? probably its mobo isnt allright aswell.

Yea usually BSOD's while setting up windows is caused by ram,but I have had before a machine that did this and it was actually caused by the cdrom drive.

Usually it just cannot read from disc or will error out on certain files but this one was so bad that it made the hole machine unstable even after I loaded windows on a dvd writer and tried to load software with normal drive it would BSOD.
