Broken GTX275?

I've recenty bought a Palit GTX275, I installed it and updated my windows experience index. I know those scores mean nothing but it did give me my first indication that something was up. Note for all of the tests below the games were ran at 1280x1024 at full settings, I also have the latest nVidia driver installed.

My new card only scores 4.9 on Windows 7 RC1, this seemed a little odd as my old 8800GT used to score 5.9. I then tried to bench the card in Counter Strike: Source and it only managed to score 275.56 FPS. I aksed my freind with the same processor and motherboard as me (E8400 @ 3.6 and Biostar Tpower i45) with his 4870 and he managed 570FPS.

I then tested FarCry2, I set everything to full and ran the game. I can only maintain an FPS of about 14. I found benchmarks on the internet, according to these my card should be able to manage around 47FPS. I also asked my freind with the 4870 to run the game at these settings and he managed 60+. I know ATi cards are better in this game but my card shouldn't be that bad.

I gave the card one last test in 3DMark Vantage, my card only scored 7319. Is it just me or is there something up? I don't think its a power issue as I've checked the power connections and the card isn't screaming at me when I turn the computer on. Does any one have any suggestions on what I can do to remedy this, or shall the card back?

I do believe the 4870 is a much faster card?

Don't think it is, it's the 4890 that the 275 is pitched against, but the performance seen here doesn't seem up to par.

Try uninstalling it again, and running something like driver cleaner pro, then reinstalling the latest drivers.

Try returning your overclock to stock settings if you're still having troubles and see if that makes a difference.

Could always try and run ATI Tool's artifact scanner mode to see if it's working properly.

The 4890 is slightly quicker in most things. It matches closely to a 285.

Other than that though, do as suggested above.

Just as a matter of interest, what PSU do you have? Also, how hot is the card getting?

Thanks for the responces, no the 4870 isn't as powerful and the 275 and in most modern games the 275 and the 4890 are evenly matched, each having games they excel in.

I have a Be Quiet Dark Power Pro 650W PSU, and the card has an after market cooler and idels around 40-41oC, I can't tell you what the temps are like under load as I haven't checked them yet.

I will try the ATi Artifact tool as soon as I am able to get my computer working again, overclocked and now it won't post

No, look in pretty much any review and the 4890 is compared to this, the GTX275. Both have things each are better in but nothing in it really, just go for what you like the most lol. The 285 beats the 4890 in pretty much everything

Anyway, I'd just suggest reinstalling the drivers, see if that helps at all. Also, like DeMoB said, using ATI Tool to test for artifacts will let you know your cards faulty

As your PC won't post. Flip out the coin sized battery for 30 seconds with the power lead out of the PSU. It'll reset your BIOS to default and you will have a working computer again

Yeah I tried that, I also reset the CMOS jumper, turns out 2 sticks of my memory had died. I knew it was a memory error just took me a while to find out which sticks went. All I can say is I'm glad OCZ Platanium memory has a lifetime warrenty.

Now I'm back online I will reinstall my graphics drivers and give it one more shot, I will also try the ATi Tool before and after and post the result on here.

EDIT: I have reinstalled the drivers and ran the same benchmark in Counter Strike: Source and I am still getting 275FPS. I have also ran the ATi Tool and the card did not artifact. Looks like I'm going to be sending this back in the post today.

i noticed u said you had an aftermarket cooler for ur 275

i had an an accelero xtreme for my 280 and it is just a thought but the 1 thing they didnt tell u in the instructions is there is a bracket around the gpu that needs to be taken off to make the correct amount of contact between gpu and ur aftermarket cooler is there a bracket around ur 275's gpu??

if so i would of thought it needs to come off!!

Thanks for posting, I should have been clearer. My card does not have a stock cooler, if had an "aftermarker" cooler that was fitted by Palit. When I recieved it the card, the cooler have already been attached. I very much doubt they expected me to take the card apart and remove something thats in contact with the GPU and the coolers heatplate.

Anyway thanks for all the replies in this thread, I managed to get a RMA after having an argument with a arrogant assistant.
