Boots Banned Isopropyl Alcohol ?

I went to Boots today to see if they had some isopropyl alcohol as it's useful for cleaning pretty much any surface i.e mice, Keyboards etc.... as it disinfects, Cuts through grime like a hot knife through butter and evaporates leaving no residue behind and the head pharmacist came out after the sales assistant looking a tad wary and he said -

"No sorry we've actually been banned from selling that due to people misusing it".

I found other places online that sell it, Namely Amazon and quickly ordered 6 x 500ml bottles to put into storage just in case other places start banning this very useful cleaning stuff.

Does anyone think other places will start removing this from shelves too ? I find it odd punishing people for the 1 or 2 idiots that might misuse it :(

Well... you could try asking at a Chemist's or find a lab material retailer.
That's the two places I'd buy isopropyl from.

None near where I live, I just bought 6 bottles from amazon ^_^

Amazon have been very picky recently for NI. Can;t get anything with a battery or anything flammable.

Had to get my new UPS from somewhere else :(. Such a shame as I subscribe to Prime.

That's nuts

This whole nanny like behaviour is getting a little much IMO.

How can you even abuse that stuff? Drink it? People who drink isopropyl alcohol would also drink petrol and for explosives there is other more effective stuff as well.

Could have something to do with the production of drugs or other substances possibly ? Aint got a clue TBH.

Dude seriously I would not use it on plastic. It alters the structure and makes it weaker.

Been using it for years bud, Never done any damage, It's the ethyl stuff that does damage quite quickly, Iso does as well but only if you soak stuff in it for more than a few seconds, A quick wipe does nothing other than de-grime it.

Appreciate the concern though :)

Window cleaner with vinegar does the same job and smells nice too.

Honestly dude, I've done many hours of experimenting with it and plastic and it alters the structure making it brittle. I appreciate you've never had any issues with it but it's just scientific fact.

I know but I always water it down so it's not so concentrated when using it with plastics on mice and keyboards and wipe it all down with a microfibre cloth afterwards hence I haven't had a problem with it during years of use :)

I'll give your method a try for future cleaning of plastics though :)

Yeah it certainly smells a lot nicer man. Iso reminds me of an old ex friend of mine from my childhood who was an alcoholic lol. He always bloody stunk like that.

The only thing I use my iso for is removing sticker gunk and cleaning my glass lenses on my glasses (to cut through any grease or dirt I may get on them whilst working).

:O Won't it cut through the protective layers they put on the lenses? -I have crystal ones-

What would you recommend for cleaning gunk on rubber wrist rests ?

No protection on mine dude. I bought two pairs just to be sure lol.

Window cleaner with vinegar again dude. It doesn't leave any residue either. My mum used to polish her TV. In the end it looked stupid as the finish was matt. That's when I was told to use window cleaner as the vinegar acts as the agent that breaks down the grease and hand oil etc.

Been using it ever since man, never damaged anything.

Possibly due to them getting busted for unsafe air transport of items such as li-ion batteries and aerosols. Looks like they're arguing the case, but I imagine it'll take at least 12 months before they start international shipment of such things again.

Might be something you've already considered so apologies if this sounds obvious, but have you tried the Maplin stuff? I've not tried it yet myself, but they have / had a range of electronics / circuit-board cleaners which I thought were Iso-based.

I was going to get some for when I start building effects pedals for my guitars again.
