Was playing some dust 1 today and my fps was literally jumping from 20 to 100 every second making plaing impossible, and nothing was running in the background...Windows is generally being a git at everything, taking ages to load stuff etc. so im getting closer and closer to a format. Any1 else found this? My system should not be experiencing this

Any ideas how I could diagnose this problem and how to stop it? Seems to happen to me before I get a year out of my windows install :(

I found when this happened, my harddrive tranfer rate had been dropped.

So it was in PIO mode, which is very CPU intense.

Might be your prob! :p

Hmmmm, gonna have to get myself and external sometime anyway!

When i do start a fresh (this problem always seems to occur over time!) what can I do to keep it from happening? Like is there a way to keep my registry in top notch condition etc.?

Flaming annoys me it does :(

Regular (e.g., weekly) use of apps like Crap Cleaner and Registry Mechanic will help a lot. Also keeping your data folders/files on a separate partion to your OS and programs. After I've done a fresh OS re-install and got my PC exactly how I want it with all the programs I use installed I take an image of my OS partiton (using Acronis True Image) which I store on a NAS. If I run into major snags it literraly takes me 2 mins of my time to restore the image to the OS partition.

HTH

I already use ccleaner regulary, haven't got registry mechanic, is it worth buying?

I'll keep that seperate partition in mind when i format. So you make an image once everything is set up before any problems can occur? Then store the image on an external hdd for example?

Yep. I create the image on a hard disk in a Network Attached Storage device on a gigabit LAN so file transfer times are as low as I can get them.

p.s. Registry Mechanic is really good. You can get a legal free license for Version 5; I'll see if I can find the link for you.

Doesn't necessarily have to be external. If you've got spare bays you can use a cheapo IDE internal. Or you can span your image across 2 or more DVDs if it's > 4 gig.
