Maybe looks a bit fugly but there`s the writer: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/productinfo.asp?WebProductID=796991

.. and the reader: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/productinfo.asp?WebProductID=796988

Writer is around £155, reader around £90, media still £8/£9 for 25g.

Reader is the actual one I bought for around £120 I think it was, I don`t think it`ll be that long before they`re a serious consideration. Quite supprized how cheap the writers are now. Media needs to come down a bit, but I think we have to w8 for the far eastern mass producers to start churning them out, but still, it is 25g.

Thats actually pretty reasonable. A while before I would consider it but thats mainly due to not having a great deal of use for portable 25g discs. Although with the current shift towards HD happening across all formats I cant see it being long until they're the new DVD.

And £9 isnt really that bad for 25g when you think about it lol, just seems a rip because its a plastic disc

The disc prices have still gotta come down, which is gonna forever, they are far too high (even dual layer DVDs are still too high and they've been around for a ages).

Any recommendations

Will be looking in the future to get a blu ray. Has anybody done any research into the models and prices to avoid me trawling around the net?

On one forum in the last couple of days someone picked up a liteon blu ray for £65 +p&p OMG!

Any info more than welcome.

Isn't technology amazing

Isn't technology amazing, you only need to think back to the start of DVD and how much they cost. CAn't remember what my pc dvd cost but my home player was £220 right at the start but they sell for a tenner now, unreal.

As Del Boy says 'this time next year Rodney...'!

like with dvd+-R, RW, RAM... would it not be be wiser to wait for combo Blu-Ray/HD-DVD drives, which will be inevitably the norm in a few years time? Same for standalones I'd of thought. I wont be buying one until combo standalones are < £80. But then I wont pay much for anything :p

Here, here.

Especially as I predicted about a year ago that Bluray would be victorious, banishing HDDVD to the shelves to sit with the C5 and betamax. The manufacturers will be falling over themselves to make combined drives and bring them to market to try and dominate the pc and home cinema markets.

Nice post Adam.

I doubt we will see much more HD-DVD from now on - No need for combo drives.

BD prices are coming down, wait for the speed to go up and I am there! :)
