BIOS update - X58

Hi all!

I'm planning to format my pc and I'm thinking about updating my bios, since it's a veeeery old release.

I currently have FB revision while the latest is the FK:
http://www.gigabyte.eu/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3103#bios
( with an i7 920 )

I'm not having any particular issue with this bios but those small changelogs could imply better voltage control and better OC... however I've discovered that I can only update via @bios, the Gigabyte windows utility, because latest BIOSes are too big to be managed by Qflash

Is it worth updating? Currently I can only keep a fixed voltage in OC, so it could be nice to have a better control on my overclock settings ( if there are any )

Moreover, how does Dual BIOS work, exactly? Does it recover automatically after a bad flashing? Is it safe enough to try?

Thank you

EDIT: I posted in the wrong section D: could a mod/admin move the thread to the right section ( mainboard&cpu I suppose )?

Yes, it does recover without you having to do anything. At least that is how it should work, on paper. I've fortunatley never needed to take use of this technology. But it should be safe. You can read more about it here on Gigabyte's own site.

Taking in mind that you currently have the FB version, I would recommend updating to the latest patch. There is quite a lot of changes made that you could/might benefit from. Regardless I always like to keep my BIOS updated, it's the core system of your PC after all and what runs your hardware.

I personally think that @BIOS is easy to use, as long as you make sure to download the right file.

Did you ever use it on x58? Did you have any problem?

I wouldn't like to brick my mobo...

Never used it on X58, but I have used it on P55 many times. I still use my P55 (1156) board, with i5 750 (OC). Works like a charm ;] I currently have the latest BIOS.

So you updated with @bios? Is you mobo dual bios?

Yes, I have always uesd @BIOS for updating to the latest BIOS version (on this board). Indeed, my motherboard does have dual BIOS technology. Although it has never been taken use of.

Some years ago I watched a pal of mine flash his BIOS, when he experienced some problems due to downloading the wrong file to patch. He, at the time also had the dual BIOS feature on his MOBO and it did work, for him. Other than that I have no personal experience with it.

But keeping your BIOS updated is never a bad thing.

Ironically, most of thread I'm reading about bios updating tell the opposite: don't fix if it isn't broken...

All those "don't ever use @bios!!1!!!!1" scare me a lot D:

I hope others will share their experience.

I have never had problems with it, just do as instructed and make sure to download the file that match your BIOS and MOBO. Updating the BIOS with this software is not rocket science. How people manage to do it wrong is beyond me.

That's mainly due to Windows instability AFAIK, in fact they suggest to terminate most processes running before using @bios ( antivirus, firewall etc )

I'll wait for other answers here and there, maybe tomorrow I'll try ( but I have to set stock settings in the bios )

Well... this FK bios is almost completely different. It also allows me to set a fixed x21 multiplier, while i could only put x20 with the old one as far as I remember

Thanks for helping!
