BF4 Graphics card upgrade!

a 7790 should be able to handle BF4 quite decently at 720p..

Anyway, See you on the battlefield!

I'm using a 7790 at 1366x768 and the beta is unplayable. Even with lowest settings I'm getting horrible, inconsistant framerates that are only 4-8 higher than with the mix of highs/mediums that it defaulted to. CPU stressed to max but GPU hardly doing anything

Screenshot was taken within a few seconds of quitting out of game. Appears to have not gone over 30% load at any time.

N.B: This is using the latest beta drivers.

The same system plays BF3 rather well even on Ultra settings at that resolution.

720p is lower then 768p:p

Then it's unoptimized for you... my 7950 runs at nearly 100% load the entire time.

I'm aware that something is amiss for the GPU to not be getting loaded beyond 30%, I was simply stating that I have had problems running the beta with the card you suggested would run BF4 decently.
Of course, it's only the "beta" and *hopefully* isn't indicative of the final release but it stands to reason that if I have had an issue with that particular card then others may too.

well the way beta is goin two 780's r not enough apperently lol

Oh a one poster, posting bullshit... excellent.

This is entirely untrue, I'm running two 580's in sli with 3GB vram and I'm playing on all max settings and getting excellent frame rates. (64 player games, fps ranging from 45 in ultra busy situations, to 150+ in others). There seems to be some kind of small memory leak when you get a long way into a big game, (especially when the tower is down) the fps will be lower towards the final quarter of a match.

A couple of things to try: First, set in-game settings to Auto, some 'higher' settings give better playability than lower ones (at least that's the general consensus).

Try setting the process priority of bf4.exe to low sounds counter-intuitive but it apparently works.

Also there is talk of turning off 3 of the cores on hexcore AMD cpu's apparently this helps, also make sure none of your cores are 'parked'.

The game seems to be more CPU bound than GPU bound, (my setup is an excellent example of this). And apparently anything nVidia from 6 series upwards is struggling, most believe in part because the CPU can't keep up.

If your CPU is at 100% and your GPU at 30% then you can easily see the issue. BF4 seems to be insanely multi-core friendly, and is hating on older CPU's at the minute.

Bare in mind, the beta build is OVER a month old, they've openly stated this, the beta is to test SERVER-SIDE performance not client-side, and apparently is not representative of final release client-site code/performance levels.

I read somewhere that it likes windows 8 a bit more than seven and on identical rigs apart from os the one running 8 worked better. Maybe that could be another thing to consider I know I am

Make sure you are not playing in windowed mode as it totally kills the GPU usage.

I made the same mistake, one minute in windowed mode I was getting 25fps but when I went fullscreen I was up to 100fps.

Yes this rumour is running around, but there is also the one that beta driver makes one worse and the other better. The screenshot comparisons that have been around (reddit and such) have been vastly incomparable in that one was domi, the other conquest, one with dust, one without.. No consistency at all really.

I'd be surprised (and frankly annoyed) if they've somehow made it run better on 8 over 7. Because that would feel like them trying to force us to Pony-up for windows 8... which brings .. what to the table in terms of gaming exactly?

Thanks SuB, I'll give some of that a try, not sure how to disable cores or see if they're "parked" but can easily research it later. I have tried all combinations of graphics settings, even lowering the resolution further and changing the resolution scale, nothing seems to make more than a few fps difference. Wondering if it's ever going to be playable with only 1GB VRAM.

I know the beta is supposedly to test the server back-end, but DICE said the same about BF3 and then on release hardly anything had changed (console version at least) just toned down destruction.

This was in fullscreen, I did try it in windowed mode as well, as World of Warcraft oddly used to run smoother like that on an ancient computer I had, it made no difference whatsoever. Framerates were the same in both instances.

I'm happy with my xfx HD 7790 and I even got to choose a free game :) (FarCry 3) I can see I'm bottlenecked in BF3 multiplayer with frame drops frequently but overall I'm happy. I cannot play BF4 beta with my CPU however I am planning an upgrade for this Christmas. Thank you to all the people who posted suggestions and help on this thread :)

just change the affinity in your process list to disable it on some cores mate.

Tried disabling multiple configurations of cores, which resulted in me getting 2/3 fps sat on the deploy screen, with the remaining cores maxed out.

Can't figure out why it's not putting any load on the GPU

Agreed. The other thing is, as you can see on the GPU-Z screenshot, the memory speed keeps inexplicably dropping as well.

I knew I'd have to take a performance hit from BF3 to BF4, but this is daft lol

try setting your graphics card to high power mode in settings? is that an option for amd cards?

After the latest update the game has been ultra smooth for me.

Running it on the highest setting's I can set them to @ 1080p and I am running it at anything from 60 to 130fps.

It uses all 2gb of my vram as well.

I am on Windows 7 as well.
