thats a good idea too.
Having just had a quick look.. it seems IGN own and still use the domain name. they just dont have any of the services running any more.
Not entierly sure why they would keep it in the state it is now, but given many people have made emulators and Some must have tried to attain the domain from them, I imagine they think it could be worth some money and it may not be that easy to take it off their hands.
Also i guess that the game devs/publishers would not want some one like me running servers unchecked.
i used to run the foyer for shogun total war after ea abandoned it. And the 1st problem you find is... You need to check all cd keys are valid. If you have no way of doing that "publisher/dev did not provide you with the tools" (i wouldnt provide me with the tools) then the only option you have as a server manager is to just not check for cd keys at all. And that means there is no anti piracy check for online.
In the great scheem oof things, given that you cant play legitemate copys online right now, having no cd key check would not seem like a issue, but for publishers/game devs??
Its probably a huge factor.. And id imagine they would not be wanting things made easy either.
