BF2 & 2142 (Post GameSpy)

I still play swat 4 even though game spy went bye bye.
most of the time all you need is to update the host file to point at a server that emulates game spy..
the only issue is there are a good half dozen of the things.

some one needs to step up. and just make one unified one so it only needs one host file edit and all your game spy games work online again. More importaintly, Every one who has directed their host file else where will All be populating the same server list. This is prefereable to 1/2 a dosen diferent server lists scattered arround that only a % of people find the servers for.

is the gamespy name/domain still licensed/owned? wonder if that could be bought and then revamped, thus, negating the need for any host file foolery

thats a good idea too.
Having just had a quick look.. it seems IGN own and still use the domain name. they just dont have any of the services running any more.
Not entierly sure why they would keep it in the state it is now, but given many people have made emulators and Some must have tried to attain the domain from them, I imagine they think it could be worth some money and it may not be that easy to take it off their hands.

Also i guess that the game devs/publishers would not want some one like me running servers unchecked.
i used to run the foyer for shogun total war after ea abandoned it. And the 1st problem you find is... You need to check all cd keys are valid. If you have no way of doing that "publisher/dev did not provide you with the tools" (i wouldnt provide me with the tools) then the only option you have as a server manager is to just not check for cd keys at all. And that means there is no anti piracy check for online.
In the great scheem oof things, given that you cant play legitemate copys online right now, having no cd key check would not seem like a issue, but for publishers/game devs??
Its probably a huge factor.. And id imagine they would not be wanting things made easy either.

Tbh if you've turned off your online services for a system, and someone else is taking over because you don't see it as a financially viable solution, then in my opinion, you have no right to quabble over CDKeys or piracy in any way.
If you're not supporting the game, then frankly you shouldn't be trying to make more money from sales from it. If people have to emulate the servers then piracy should be ignored.

I agree. But to get the domain im pretty sure you have to convince all the publishers/developers who used the service of the same thing.. And i really doubt they see it the same way lol..
