Best Powerline adapters

Hi guys,

Basically - my mum works for the exam board, and she's been told she needs to use a straight through ethernet cable for web-conferencing, and she isnt allowed to use wifi on her laptop. Because of the location of the router, we cant run an ethernet cable, so we're going to go with powerline adapters.

I have no idea about good brands, or what makes a good powerline adapter. We need a kit of 2, but I would like to have the option to add more if they show to be good, to get iplayer on the TVs.

Price is not an issue really as AQA will pay for them, but I'm guessing there will be some form of limit to it, but if we have to pay £30 ourselves then that's not really an issue.

So what do you guys recommend?

If price ain't an issue then you could maybe look at the power-line enabled routers. If say your current router is on the old side.

You can get routers which have powerline built in. So, where we plug our BT Hub into the mains, that would act as a powerline connection.

Our router's fine? We have the latest BT homehub

What is a powerline enabled router?

It just means that the router has he power line adapter built in.

These routers are fairly new, an example would be the D-Link DHP-1565. It looks a little bulky as the router also contains the transformer as powerline wont carry over DC. But on the other hand you don't have to have a fat ass transformer on the wall.

I use the Belkin Powerline 1Gbps/1000Mbps adapters but considering your mum is only going to be using it for web-conferencing they might be overkill :p
Any 200mbps kit should do the trick.

Cheers, we got the 500mbps TP Link ones for around £50. Means I can steal it whenever she isnt in a conference - and she only has 1 btw :)

I personally have my entire place kitted out with netgear kit from routers to access points, home plugs everything.

I really wouldnt spend my money on anything else.

These TP Link ones seem pretty good so far,. I would personally have favoured netgear due to good experiences with routers in the past, but they seem so expensive compared to the TP Link - and tbf, we dont really need these for much anyway.

I have been doing ping tests to compare to my wifi link from my motherboard, and it does seem far more stable.

Thanks for the advice though guys - I'm seriously considering getting more of these for myself so will definitely be bearing the netgears in mind.

i have a set of lynksis cisco ple300 (don't think they make these particular ones anymore) ones and they're bullet proof, as long as they're minimum rated 200mbs then they're all pretty decent. some even have wifi repeaters built into them, have a look at solwise
