Best free anti virus software?

i second microsoft security essentials, never failed me or any of my client builds in the past

Micorsoft security essentials... Terrible from reviews i have seen. AVG 2013 free seems to be ranked in the top 3 while mainly hitting #1 often. My subscription is also almost up and if my parents are too stingy about getting a new AV then that is what i'll end up going to... I should also add i'm a secruity freak and trust nothing on the internet. So i would say personally follow my advice. Not trying to disrespect others though.

For a malware only software i would recommend MalwareBytes; this software is incredibly powerful.

Bitdefender 2013 total security along with Malwarebytes seems to be almost bulletproof. Both are rated #1 for a reason.

i use a paid version of AVG but can recommend the free one as well
essentials tends to be horrible in reviews

Oh bloddy hell. As i just read some ppls use AVG I had the creeping horrors. That is the biggest crap anti virus programm i have ever seen. I use Avast since about 4 or 5 years. Sandbox tool is very helpfull if you get send suspicious stuff or just wanna have some extra security. http://www.dict.cc/englisch-deutsch/horrors..html

I just use it to check internally, i monitor what i download and i know what sites i go on, I'd rather use AVG over norton or other packages that get their claws into every nook and cranny and can never be truely deleted lol.

Are you using Windows 8 by any chance? If you are it has Microsoft Security Essentials built into it so no need for another AV unless you want to use a different one to MSE.

Hate antivirus, just apply common sense and you'll be golden :)

This is so stupid it's unreal.

I wasn't going to bother replying as it wouldn't be worth it but this landed in my lap:

Edit: And this has just popped up in my news feed.

Very large reputable websites being attacked and now pointing to ones with unknown intentions.

It's no longer the time where you can assume because you don't download anything 'dodgey' you're perfectly fine.

I hate free antivirus but the one good one that i used before is MSE. With MSE, just browse the internet with common sense and you will never get infected. I suggest using a paid one though like the one from gdata.

Comodo is by far the best free AV but its more of an internet security, but it can be a real c.... just to get somethings to work E.G when i ran a minecraft server on my PC trying to open a port to let my friends play was so frustrating i just gave up.

comodo the only FREE one to get top scores Here

but if we are all honest here, you can avoid most malware by staying away from certain sites and not downloading their "stuff".
