Best CPU

probably the first few questions that will be asked before you get an answer to that.
What will it be needed for?
Is there any budget restriction?
Gaming and or rendering?
and so on ^^

^ +1 and don't forget overclocking.

I found this really helpful for deciding which CPU to go for with respect to gaming. In the end I chose the i5-4440 as it offered very close to stock 4690k performance for ~£35 less. But I actually already had a 4690k so it didn't make sense to get two.

Really Entry Level - G3258 Pentium K (I'd aim higher than this if you have a MVIIG tbh)
Entry Level - i3 4360
Just gaming - i5 4460
Gaming/overclocking - i5 4690k
Overclocking/overkill/power - i7 4790k

4690K would be my choice, money no object I'd get the 4790K, I've been rendering now for a little over 3 weeks and while the G3258 is a stout little trooper and does well, the bigger the model gets it really really struggles. As for gaming the G3258 is awesome but it does require a mandatory Overclock.. anyway I'd go with the 4690k.

The i5-4690K is a trooper. I have one of them and just bought a i7-4790K to replace it. The i5 will go to another box.

There is a US$100 difference between the i5-4690K & i7-4790K still am choosing which one & don't want to regret later on....

The i7 CPU has a faster clock speed and chews through tasks much quicker. The i5 CPU is plenty fast, and good for most tasks. If you're processing videos or doing computation heavy tasks, the i7 is the way to go.
For gaming, the i5 works great.

I own both of them and both are good. If the extra money will strain your finances, then get the i5. If not, go for the i7.

Err but no it really doesn't. Only place where it will show big leaps of extra performance is when you are doing mathematical/video/audio/movie and editing/rendering; also when doing encoding/decoding it will show gains but even then its still only a handful of seconds. Only things that can use Hyperthreading will show big gains.

Use the $100 on a gtx970 don't buy an 980 yet as soon the 14nm versions are releasing as in months but the 350$ spent on a 970 and the DEVILS Canyon I5 4690k, and a good 240 mm if possible closed loop exp. thermaltekWater3.0Extreme and I recommend Asus/Asrock asrock is asus but its johnny wendels branch the pro video gamer who won 2002-2005 worl championship in a row on Different games each year. Any ways his crew develops a lot of new utilities that u see asus eventually migrate to their boards and the Killer edition Z97 boards with killer networking e2200 and PURITY SOUND 2 3 core audio chip gold capacitors in xfire is $130 the Pro that will run sl! is 140 but is 3 gpu either come with a M@ ngff ssd slot which is awesome and a sata express 10gbps option as well they are packed with a sick bios and in window fstream utility allowing ram discks to overvclockign to virtual hardware viewer macro's mouse pulling sniper modes fan tuner amongst others. My current setup i5 4690k asrock fatal1ty z97 killer edition, thermaltek water3.0Extreme cpu cooler and the corsair H60 for the gpu with corsairs gpu bracket adapter $35 on amazon, 8 gb dual channel gskilll ripjaw 1600 set + Crucial Ballistic sports 16gb dc set + 24 gb ram, osz extreme 750w modular psu, Pioneer blu ray r 4 more 140mm system fans 3-4 pin the board has 7-8 plugs for fans btw in a Coolmaster cm 690 II advanced gaming case with wide stance 240mm closed loop radiator recess along the top so the fans are all that shows and the radiator is hidden=. huge rubber feet 5-6" long in the back with hicking boot treads and big squares up front assuring stability the GTX 760 4gb kicks ass going to 970 soon. the i7 actually doesn't game any better the the dc I5 proven by maximum pc and PC gamer I believe both December issues
