Hey Guys

Can anyone tell me what the best cpu cooler is for a i7 920 OC'ed to 4ghz, at present I have the H50 Corsair cooler, but under load its rubbish, under 100% load my cpu is going over 90 degree's

Any help would be ace......

Haven't got round to Watercooling yet, just haven't had the time

Cheers

Hay

Hi

How do you have the fan(s) installed on your H50, Corsiar recomends that you have them pulling in cool air into the case.

I thought H50 were meant to be quite good. Are you using 2 fans.

I cant reli suggest any air coolers as i have not used them myself but check reveiws.

Ive herd good things about Tuniq Tower 120, Coolermaster v8 and Thermalright Ultra 120 but i would suggest looking up reviews first.

You could lower your clocks till you get round to installing watercooling unit.

Tom said hes gana be doing a big reveiw on all the heatsinks sometime in the future so if u can hold out for that.

hope this helps

The Vcore is the information we need mainly hayles. Have you got the pump plugged into a 12v line just to make sure the mobo isnt slowing it down?

I haver only 1 fan attached to the H50, as I couldn't fit another as the pump was in the way. the pump is plugged straight into the PSU and so is the fan.

According to CPU-Z the CPU Vcore is 1.34

You should plug the fan and pump into fan headers on your mobo. Then make sure in your bios that the pump is running at full speed for best performance.

Plug it into the cpu to test hayles, if the temps drop adjust the bios till that matches the direct method.

I prefer direct tbh you dont have to worry then.

wait till you have the money for water hayles. dont waste any more money. We all know you dont actualy NEED it at 4ghz either. Drop it back to 3.6 for now and save for a decent water loop.

Agreed. If you get an air cooler you might just get a 2 degree difference with what you have now which is really not worth it. Unless you go with the Noctua D14 water is the only way forward.

I have taken my overclock down to 3.4ish, and at 100% load temps go to 80 - 82 degrees, is that a safer temp?

its mainly in the high 70's, but goes into the 80's a couple of times

I think it should perform better. You sure there's nothing wrong with it? My mate has the Prolimatech Megahalems and he's got his i7-860 to 4Ghz on air without any problems. His temps are somewhere in the high-60's, and I don't think there should be such a big difference even though you have an i7-920...

im currently at 3.36 with mine, voltage way lower. under 1.2 vcore. and i have the same cooler, corsair h50. My temps at idle and full load are 41*c and load is between 61-64*c. thats with intel burn running for bout half hour. and even when i was letting my mb set the voltages, never did i get up to 78*c. and that was with something like 1.35 vcore or a little higher. so the cooler isnt rubbish. if your case temps are good, then check the seating on the cpu. and check to make sure the pump is spinning as fast as it should be. i currently have the pump in an aux fan port on the mobo, and one of the 2 fans in the p/p setup connected to the cpu fan port. the pump normally runs somewhere around 1400 rpm, and the fan between 1100 and up depending on load.

If you're looking at a new HSF anyway, I can tell you the Tuniq 120 Extreme is, well, HUGE! I have an MSI mobo, GD-85 (P55), and the Tuniq blocks off one of my RAM slots. Not a deal breaker for me as I'm going 2x2GB with Win7-32bit, but be aware that some of these coolers are monsters... waaaay bigger than what I used to see. o.0

(Gotta wait 'til the end of the month for me to get my video card and HDDs or SSDs before I can let you know how well the Tuniq works. ;[

I7 cpus are very hot 90c load @ 4ghz sounds about wright. If your H50 is getting those twmps then you will be dissatisfied getting an air cooler. The best bet is to get a custom water cooling unit.

Remember all cpu's are different and some will be hotter than others. Is your chip a C0 or D0? D0 seem to overclock better resulting in lower vcore and lower temps. CAn you drop the vcore any more without loosing stability?

Check the mounting of the H50, and make sure ambient isn't much greater than 20c.
