BenQ XL2420t or 2720t

Hi.
I'm currently running this new system...
i7 3930k/evga gtx 670 2gb FTW/vengeance 16gb/rampage 4 formula/silverstone strider 850w gold evolution/win7 pro 64b
...and I'm looking to upgrade from my old trusty entry level Viewsonic 19 inch to one of the new BenQ XL monitors, but i have two questions.
1. I'm tossing up between the XL2420T and the 2720T (24 or 27 inch). I play mostly FPS/Adventure games. Games like Starcraft/Total War/SimCity etc are not really my cup of tea. I'm heard conflicting stories of what's better for games like Battlefield etc. Some people say the 27 inch screen puts part of the action in you peripherals if you're siting up close and 24 inch is more ideal to get the most out of games like this. Any thoughts on this?
2. Is it possible to set it up so say, if I was playing something like Skyrim, that I could have a dual screen setup with fullscreen in the main monitor and a walkthough/youtube/something going on the 19 inch, or would I be better off just selling/giving away the old one. If it is possible, would my graphics suffer considering the 670 will be trying to push out 120Hz.

I have a 22", but over at a friends have played on a 27" LED 120hz. I like game play on the larger screen, no money to get one for myself. Just my 2 cents. I'm sure others that actually own some will be here soon.

Personally, I'd wouldn't get a 120hz panel. You're better off with the colour reproduction on an IPS screen than wasting money on a 120hz panel, especially when you're graphics card will only manage 70FPS max on games anyway really.

As for running side by side - yes you can do that easily. But you wouldn't be able to control the other screen while gaming without alt-tabbing out of the game. You'll still be able to view any walk throughs, for example, but you wouldn't be able to scroll down to the next chapter without pausing and minimising the game.

IMO - and most others on these forums, you'd be better off with something like a 23/24inch LG/Iiyama/Dell IPS panel and saving some money. Or - going from the budget of the 27inch, you could get a higher resolution 27inch panel like:

the 120hz js great for fps gaming but i have some advice for anyone considering one:

do not buy more than one 120hz monitor, especially not for surround or eyefinity. barely any games look any good with it and the colours are shit at the extreme edges. its also damn hard to match the colours between these things!

do not buy a 27 inch 1080p screen unless you are old and blind, get a 24.

the ideal setup imo is a nice big ips/pls as a main and a 120hz secondary for fps gaming. if only i'd known this before...
 
I don't find anything special about IPS except the viewing angles.

That's just my opinion...

To me the colors don't seem that much better.

I'd choose 120hz over IPS ANY day.

Not too sure which IPS you bought then...

But there is a huge difference between them

Anyway, i'm happy with my purchase, you won't be dissapointed getting XL2420T.

The colors are perfect after i've calibrated it.

Gamma is spot on, 2.2, the website i've linked confirmed it after calibrating.

edit: I see you are going to use it for FPS games like Battlefield.
I had to set MSAA to 2x to achieve around 120fps, 4x had a bit of a impact and the smoothness isnt there.

I'd say put in another 670 later, it can handle current games for now pretty well.

Thanks for your help. Any particular calibation files/settings you could recommend?
 
I got a XL2420TX and I'm very satisfied, huge improvement from my last BenQ 27" display that I bought very cheap. But If ur looking for good 3D experience you should not go for the 2420T, it does not have nvidia 3d vision 2 which is a improved version of 3D vision, 3d vision 2 is much more friendly for your eyes so that you can game for a longer period, or watch 3D movies. 2420TX also comes with a integrated 3D vision IR emitter and wireless glasses (you can recharge these with a micro usb cable that comes with it). Thats a pretty nice bundle, and you get for what you pay for.
Lets say you bought the Xl2420T and you decide that you want 3D vision and you need to buy some 3D vision nvidia glasses and an emitter for your monitor, what you'll end up with is spending more money on a monitor that is both a little bit worse than the XL2420TX and has a lot less features.
But if u aren't interessted in 3D vision gaming or 3D movies on your PC, than all that I mentioned above doesn't matter to you anyway.

Final conclusion:
Buy a XL2420T if you'r not interested in 3D vision. (does not come with 3D glasses or IR emitter)
Or buy the XL2420TX if you'r interested in 3D vision. (you get glasses, IR emitter and nvidia 3D vision 2)
