Benchmarking a Laptop

Many people consider laptops to be in the same group as games consoles and they are not far off the mark in my mind, but not everyone thinks like this
So can you benchmark a laptop and earn some points while doing it? Of course you can
A laptop is still a computer, complete with a CPU and graphics card and all the benchmarks you run on your PC will also run on a laptop

As we are dealing with non enthusiast hardware (which doesn’t mean you can’t overclock it) we have to consider how many submission have been made with the same hardware which, generally speaking, won’t be a lot with it being a laptop
These benchmarks still generate points for the best scores but don’t expect to earn any global points (UGP) or global team power points (GTPP)
What you will possibly earn is hardware points (UHP) or hardware team power points (HTPP) although, probably not a lot of them

Consider this; there are a total of 11 points scoring tests for the CPU system, 3 tests for system and memory and 9 tests for the GPU
If only 2 or 3 people have the same hardware and you managed to earn 2 hardware points for each test, then that would amount to 22 points for the CPU and 18 points for the GPU with the possibility of maybe 2 points for the reference clock test, I don’t consider the possibility of scoring points in the DDR3 memory tests as being feasible on this type of platform, someone may prove me wrong

Just recently Chudley asked if he could use his laptop in any way to help the team with what he’s got
The first thing to do is to check whether anyone else has had the same idea

Following the link Chudley provided shows a Samsung notebook series 7 gamer laptop with an Intel HM65 chipset, DDR3 memory, an i7 2670QM CPU and a Radeon HD 6970M graphics chip
A quick trip to hwbot with these specs and we have the information we need to get started
The CPU in question has been used in more than manufacturer’s products so that has a few more results than the GPU so we’ll start with that

All of the system benchmarks can be used here and the competition is as follows

Pifast
A single threaded benchmark this takes no benefits from having a multi core CPU
This has 15 submissions with the top score being 24.02 seconds earning 2 UHP and 7.1 HTPP
The lowest points score is 9th place at 24.32 seconds earning 0.2 UHP and 2.0 HTPP
The lowest of the 15 submissions is 26.58 seconds which earned 0.1 UHP and 1.8 HTPP
With so few submissions this is the best you could possibly earn, but it all counts to your total personal points as well as the team’s points
My top Pifast score is with the i7 2600k at 13.52 seconds which only earned me 0.1 UHP and zero HTPP, I earned more points with my E8400 score of 18.36 seconds with 6.1 UHP and 12.5 HTPP and just as much with my Q9550 score of 20.61 seconds with 7.3 UHP and 5.9 HTPP, no global points at all
Unlike a desktop counterpart CPU and motherboard combo, you can’t just disable 3 cores and OC the single core to greater heights for more points, although I may be wrong here

SuperPi 1M
Like Pifast this is a single threaded app and the points allocation is much the same throughout the submissions of which there is 18, 3 more than Pifast
The top score is 12s 121ms and scores 2.0 UHP and 7.6 HTPP, slightly higher HTPP due to there being a few more submissions
The lowest scoring result is 12s 308ms with 0.2 UHP and 2.1 HTPP
The lowest result is 13s 47ms with 0.1 UHP and 1.8 HTPP

This is pretty much the same pattern throughout all the benchmarks so I’m not going to drag this out much longer, here is the list of CPU benchmarks remaining

SuperPi 32m
PCMark 2004
PCMark 2005
CPU Frquency
wPrime 32
wPrime 1024
PCMark Vantage
UCBench 2011

Run all these benches and compare your results with those on hwbot
If anybody feels they have tips and tricks or advice they can pass on then feel free and share them

Cheers Twin,
The link I sent was to the wrong laptop - should have been this one
The principle is still the same and I will step up to the plate this week to start finding the art of the possible.
I am looking forward to seeing how it does and will post in this thread with the results as they come in.

These will all be at stock speeds to start with.
CPU
1. Superpi 1m need to figure out what to turn off etc to get lower, I have had 3 attempts so far.

GPU
1. Unigine Heaven Extreme hwbot
2. Unigine Heaven Basic hwbot
3. 3dmark 01 hwbot
4. 3dmark 03 hwbot
5. 3dmark 05 hwbot
6. 3dmark 06 hwbot
7. 3dmark vantage hwbot 1st
8. 3dmark 11 hwbot
9. Aquamark

The laptop in this new link is an NP700G7C Series 7 which has an Intel HM76 chipset, DDR3 memory, an i7 3610QM CPU and Nvidia GTX675M graphics
This doesn’t change anything really
There is about the same amount of submissions for this CPU and, as far as I can make out, there is only one other GTX 675M in the hwbot ranking so far, which guarantees at least silverware for your GPU

All the scoring graphics benchmarks can be used

· Aquamark
· 3DMark 2001 SE
· 3DMark03
· 3DMark05
· 3DMark06
· 3DMark Vantage performance
· Heaven Xtreme
· Heaven Basic
· 3DMark11 performance

Better get all the GPU benches downloaded then.

I have been off the forum due to a logon issue but am back now (obviously)

Thats brilliant mate, I am having problems getting the scores to show in the benchmark window on 3D vantage - I have to go online via the orb to see my results so have not firgured out how to submit it to HWBOT yet.

Did you install all the extra things it asks you to? such as the old version of CPU etc.

Just in case that is it.

No havnt really looked into it much

Just noticed the laptop only goes up to 1.8Ghz when running on battery even though it is a 2.7Ghz cpu with a turbo of 3.7Ghz it never goes past 1.8Ghz unless plugged in.

Running on battery also gets a very loud buzzing noise from around the cpu.

Eek, that does not sound too good, wonder if a cable is being brushed by a spinning fan or if there is a fault with the power some where.

I will run vasntage again and see if my does anything similar.

Made a thread similar to this some years ago.

Mucho points to be had. Same goes for any "odd" hardware you may come across for your pc. Basic PCI cards fly with, these days, i7s etc. Production cards, Quadros you may have in work - not many people can get hold of them.

Laptops tho, if you have the resources, faster memory than the suppliers ship can help. Doesn't need to be 4g sticks. Something small, 1g etc, but with either nicer timing or best speed the laptop will do.

Old tools used to be software like setFSB. Have no idea if modern equivs will work with these things as timing chips have changed a bunch. Of course, this is setting bios timings from the desktop. All is lost when you restart.

.. best being a laptop you don't care about with these.

Rivatuner used to be good on old gfx sets, god know what you'd use now.

Jeez. Used to strip the laptops and change the heat pads to thermal paste etc.

Fun times killing stuff.

Rast,

fully get the idea of playig around with settings etc but this is my only rig i have so I am treating it with kid gloves.

It comes witha turbo mode but i have noticed that it can be slower than the balanced mode i have.

msi afterburner is what everyone is using as a quick OC fix for graphics cards but I can remember using rivatuner - blast from the past

Perhaps when i grow some balls i will start playing more with my OC (this weekend ) and see what I can do.

blair,

I just run vantage with no flaws- I am running W7 HP and installed vantage after testing the heaven benchmark.

I have now run all tests but am struggling to submit aquamark scores online for some reason.

dunno why why is getting stuck at cpu test 2, googling doesnt seem to help at all.

had to downclock my gpu was causing the buzzing noises on battery had to settle for 50Mhz slower clock

Got P6997 in 3DMark11 dropped 400 points over 50Mhz lol

busy turning all the flags from brazilian into UK ones,

3dMark03 is taking some tweaking to get right but hopefully I will get past his score.

at the start of then night I was second in all so hopefully my clocks will improve my scores enough for the rest. If not I will continue tomorrow.

flags so far

That's a reasonable haul so far chudley:)
I make it 16.5 User Hardware Points and 44.9 Hardware Team Power Points
Include 6 gold cups and 3 silver and it looks fairly good
Nice one:cool:

Cheers Twin, I think I have pushed my card to its limit though as I cannot get it past 720 Mhz without it buzzing now where before it never used to- happened just after a lock up.

I got pretty close to to his unigine score but not past it.

Still I have no idea how he got his up to 755Mhz - and I can get no where near his aquamark score. - not even close!! I have no idea how he got it that high as mine only gets about 130k

I did look at benching the kids laptops but they were too common for any points.
