Beginner, few minor water cooling questions.

Started watching tinytomlogan on youtube recently, just wanted to thank him for the videos he has been making.

New to water cooling, I currently have a closed loop system I would like to give it to my brother and start working on my own setup. I only need a small system and I think I have the gist of it, just have a few questions...

-Should I flush the system out with de-ionised water before putting in the fluid? Or is that optional?

-Do I have to mount the reservoir/pump, or can I let it rest on a flat surface of the case?

-I noticed many fluids are not compatible with XSPC X20 450 Pump & Reservoir combo, which fluid is compatible then?

-There are fan grills included with many of the kits, do I really need to use those?

There are a number of different views on this but generally we recommend to:

1. Rinse through with slightly soapy water (to get rid of the oils and greases from manufacturing).
2. Rinse through with filtered/de-ionised water to get rid of the soapy water.
3. Fill with the coolant.

There are a number of different types of mounts. The easiest ones are the res/pump combos which fit into the optical drive bays. Otherwise I recommend the varies types of foam pads which glue/screw to the case and pump (minimises noise and you can put it pretty much anywhere).

You just want a standard coolant (de-ionised water, anti-corrosion and biocide with or with out colouring). XSPC do their own coolant which is decent enough or Mayhem's X1 series is good. There are lots of other companies out there that do similar products.

I don't bother with them. They may have a minor advantage in directing airflow but most make virtually no difference especially on a radiator. You can also get shrouds which direct flow more concisely (by rifling the airflow) but again the fans are going to be screwed onto the radiator so there is only one place the air can go...no point directing it to the same place.

You might want to consider dust filters to stop build up between the radiator fins but a good blow out every 3 months will do the same thing.

You mentioned Mayhem coolant, I was looking at another version wanted to know if this was also a safe option...
