Barracuda Green SATA 6Gb/s 2TB Hard Drive

Hello! I really need more space on my pc, so I've thought that it might be a good idea to buy a 2 TB hard disk to stock videos, photos etc. At the moment I got a Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB that is almost full. I've found this 2TB model: http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.j...45c0b210VgnVCM1000001a48090aRCRD&locale=en-US at 70 euros in a good shop, so I was thinking to order this model. I've even found a review about it: http://www.storagereview.com/seagate_barracuda_green_2tb_review_st2000dl003

Do you think it's a good buy, or maybe I should order something else? I've read this is a pretty new hard disk, with sata 3, and 4K advanced format. My motherboard ain't got sata 3. I got windows 7 ultimate edition 64 bit and ubuntu 10.10 64 bit on my pc. Do you think I can face problems with sata 3 or advanced format? How do you think it will perform compared to my 7200 rpm 500 GB Barracuda? (If performances are not too different I could even decide to install a few games on the green hard drive).

Thanks in advance.

The sata 3 advantages wont be to great on a storage drive but in terms of speed it will probably be slightly slower because it is a green 5900 rpm drive. I am more a fan of Western digital drives but if you like seagate and dont mind it being slower then it would make a great storage drive for pictures and movies because the low power usage.

I've had both WD and Seagate drivers and I've never had problems with both of them. I was thinking to buy this Barracuda Green SATA 6Gb/s 2TB Hard Drive because it is pretty new, and I've found it at 70 euros, no other particular reason. Anyway if it is slightly slower like you say I could even use it to install a few things. Thanks for your reply Matthias2437.

The sata3 on this drive is useless and the green drives are slow as »I wouldn’t buy them«, 5900rpm again it’s going to be slow. But overall 2tb for 70eur is a bargin and for storage(only storage) its fine.

Ok, in this case I will use it only for storage. I was even thinking to replace my Barracuda 7200.12 500GB (I use it for o.s. programs and games) that I bought on the beginning of the 2009, with something faster. But I see that after 2 years Seagate is still stuck with the 7200.12. And correct me if I am wrong buy buying WD or Samsung the performance improvement won't be good enough (the only option would be to spend a lot of money. To buy a velociraptor for example, but at that point I would go for a ssd!).

Ok anyway I think I'll buy the Barracuda Green SATA 6Gb/s 2TB Hard Drive, and that I will change my Barracuda 7200.12 500GB when there will be a new 7200.13 model, or if the other companies will offer something good in terms of performance. If you got ideas for an hard disk that would be a good performance upgrade compared to my Barracuda 7200.12, to keep o.s. and programs let me know. Thank you.

An improvement would be <60gb ssd. It’s enough for OS and some basic programs. 60gb model crucial 300, ocz vertex,.. would roughly set you back 100eur.

That's a good idea. I was thinking to buy a ssd after this summer, when I will buy a new pc. But I will think about it. I could keep the 7200.12 Barracuda for games and programs that are not on the ssd, and the 2 TB one to stock files.

I just found this one:"Crucial SSD 2,5'' 64GB C300 retail [CTFDDAC064MAG-1G1]" at 97,02€, on the same shop of the 2 TB green drive. How is it?

I don’t have it, but its sata3 its fast, has a good price,.. even if you don’t have a sata3 motherboard you will surely see a big improvement.

Ok I think I'll buy both of them (crucial ssd and 2 TB drive), and I should be ok for a while! Thanks for the help.

Glad I could help

hope you’ll enjoy your new hardware.
