Back to 128k!

Hey all,

I got home yesterday to find my phone line was dead, there was no dial tone through several phones that I tried but my internet still worked but was very unreliable dropping every few minutes.

So anyway I contacted BT who took a while to admit anything was wrong with the line and finally admitted there was a fault and will send an engineer out on Thursday :(

So that was me stuck without any phone or stable internet until after xmas. So I contacted my ISP (UK Online) who were very helpful and I explained the whole situation to him and asked if there was anything he could do. He explained that limiting my Sync speed to a lower speed and enabling Interleaving until the line is sorted by BT might get me up and running until then. So while I was on the phone he limited my line to 1mb, but the line was still dropping so then he tried .5mb and the line was still dropping but not as frequently. So as a last effort he tried 128k and it seems stable enough to me.

Spot on customer services from UK Online compared to the very unhelpful foreign BT customer support.

So I am now on 128k until BT come out and fix this dodgy line I have all of a sudden aquired. Do you think I would be able to play any online games with this speed connection or do I simply just not have enough bandwidth?

Rant Over :D

Merry Xmas all :)

Cheers, Sam

Aww that sucks mate, but props to UKOnline for sorting you out with a temporary workaround.

I would say that you can still game on a 128k line without too much lag. Depending on the game you might need to tweak some of the net settings tho.

I gave BF2 a quick blast before and it was ok but I had to close all other programs that use bandwidth to make it run 100% smooth.

Still better than having no connection at all over Xmas.

The joys of 128k, I have been on it for over a week now and BT cant come out till Thursday to fix it

Grrr... why should you pay line rental if you have to wait 2 weeks for them to do anything about a broken line :(

ROFL, your upload is twice your download, because i'm drunk, i find that hilarious :rollingla

This is one of the most stupid posts I've seen in a long time. Being drunk (or telling everybody about it) doesn't make you cool, it makes you look like an idiot.

to the two above post's! Nothing wrong with being merry and going onto a forum. Stop being mardy arse's!

Really cant see how he's bragging about being drunk, your both just picking fault!

Blimy... I was only joking

/crawls into corner before I get shouted at for talking about alcohol activity.

Nothing wrong with a little of the strong stuff :D

I have 6 or 7 bottles of wine that me and the missus need to polish off before we start our New Year resolutions :D

*blocks kemp from msn list for the rest of the day*

Kemp gets abusive when he's drunk....I just can't take it! I've still got the emotional bruises from Christmas :(

I think its more the point that people get drunk then go on a forum :p

Shows they are drinking either

Alone

With some fellow nerds :)

At a boring party

:D although it does make sense to warn people in your post that what u are saying is probably a load of crap :D

Whos going out tonight? :) i am

I wasn't abusive at Christmas btw :p I have occassionally had a beer or two then come back in and post before going to bed though :p

Won't be around tonight I doubt

This would be acceptable:

ROFL, your upload is twice your download, i find that hilarious

This is bragging about being drunk:

;)

I agree there's nothing wrong with coming onto a forum while drunk, but if you tell everyone about it you look like you think you're cool because of it.

Back on topic :)

BT came out first thing this morning and dug up a hole in the road, they discovered a puddle of water next to where the line was lying which was causing all the problems and had eroded my old line. So they had to use a new line and everything is sorted now. I rang UK Online up and they have put me back on upto 8mb again and everything is sweet :D

Just ran a speedtest and got the following result:

And my pings look like this:
