Honestly I'd skip gaming headsets. A proper audio setup is much more worth it.
-edit- I can also confirm the Hyper X isn't that amazing for the price audio quality wise.
That was more of my thinking too. I thought for the price it would be a good alternative. Thinking of just going with the DT990s in the end with the Fiio.
Why do you say its not good even for the price? Nearly every review/er says for the money its amazing?
From what I gather the HyperX headset uses mostly Beyerdynamic hardware, and as far as I can say, closed beyerdynamic headphones sound very good aswell...
The main problem I see here is that you're overestimating the effect better hardware will have. Do you have friends with DT 990s and DAC/AMPs? Maybe borrow some gear and try it out first, before you commit to such a big investment, because $300 isn't just spare change.
You always hear that Gaming headsets sound shit and are horrible and stuff like that, but that's not actually all there is to the story.
True, when you're listening to some high fidelity music with gaming headsets, you'll have distorted sounds, because those headsets are usually tweaked for game sounds, like louder /clearer footsteps, stronger bass for boomier explosions and stuff which will make your music experience miserable.
But that doesn't necessarily make them bad for gaming or browsing, or even the occasional listening to music.
I would honestly recommend trying this kind of stuff out before you buy it. Audio is a subjective experience and no matter what we say, it doesn't necessarily apply to you. Are there any professional music stores near you that sell these kinds of things? They'd probably not let you borrow the stuff, but it may be possible that you can try the FiiOs / DT 990s in their store. If you wanna know how gameplay sounds even in a store, record your gameplay and put it on a USB drive or smartphone or sth, and listen to it again there...
Well this is an unlikely scenario in the amazon-generation but it's at least a possibility I didn't want to leave unmentioned.
On another note, what do you currently use?
Edit: Ah now I get your point, you're "afraid" (for lack of a better term) that you will like the HyperX headphones, even tho in comparison they'd be below average (this is not a fact, this is an assumption made only for this statement, I don't actually know how the HyperX headset compares) and you just didn't know anything better, that's why you're shooting high with the DT 990 right from the start, to make sure you get a guaranteed very good audio setup, so that you have a baseline to compare other hardware to.
Well this is merely speculation, please do not take any offence if I am mistaken.
I hope that what you're getting is what you're looking for!![]()
So you ended up going for it? Good for you mate, make sure to tell us about your experience; always exciting when someone new tries hi-fi for the first time
Also, a modmic isn't your only option... I personally have a condenser mic hooked up to a mixer at home, but in the past I've used £10 desktop mics and they've got the job done if placed correctly. Good luck dude
Are you referring to the Zalman Zm-Mic1?
Yep, that's the one. Apparently it's a little tricky to make it all look neat and work seamless, but once it's setup the audio is good (literally just asked my mate how the mic was 2 seconds ago)
