Audio Clarification

Honestly I'd skip gaming headsets. A proper audio setup is much more worth it.

-edit- I can also confirm the Hyper X isn't that amazing for the price audio quality wise.

That was more of my thinking too. I thought for the price it would be a good alternative. Thinking of just going with the DT990s in the end with the Fiio.

Why do you say its not good even for the price? Nearly every review/er says for the money its amazing?

Honestly it didn't sound any better then my old Gamecom 780s. Which are quite a bit cheaper. The Hyper X is much better value then similarly priced Corsair/Razer/CM storm stuff I'm sure, but I still personally wouldn't go for them.
Build quality wise they're probably better then the gamecoms though.

From what I gather the HyperX headset uses mostly Beyerdynamic hardware, and as far as I can say, closed beyerdynamic headphones sound very good aswell...

The main problem I see here is that you're overestimating the effect better hardware will have. Do you have friends with DT 990s and DAC/AMPs? Maybe borrow some gear and try it out first, before you commit to such a big investment, because $300 isn't just spare change.
You always hear that Gaming headsets sound shit and are horrible and stuff like that, but that's not actually all there is to the story.
True, when you're listening to some high fidelity music with gaming headsets, you'll have distorted sounds, because those headsets are usually tweaked for game sounds, like louder /clearer footsteps, stronger bass for boomier explosions and stuff which will make your music experience miserable.
But that doesn't necessarily make them bad for gaming or browsing, or even the occasional listening to music.

I would honestly recommend trying this kind of stuff out before you buy it. Audio is a subjective experience and no matter what we say, it doesn't necessarily apply to you. Are there any professional music stores near you that sell these kinds of things? They'd probably not let you borrow the stuff, but it may be possible that you can try the FiiOs / DT 990s in their store. If you wanna know how gameplay sounds even in a store, record your gameplay and put it on a USB drive or smartphone or sth, and listen to it again there...

Well this is an unlikely scenario in the amazon-generation but it's at least a possibility I didn't want to leave unmentioned.

I've contemplated this too but no i don't have any professional audio places near me, this would be easier with an audio store near me but i don't have that luxury where i live.. I probably wouldn't have started this thread in the first place lol
You're right that it is subjective but i've always had keen hearing so i'm positive i can tell the difference. I think its worth investing just for the more neutral sound. Kind of tired of the too bassy gaming headpsets.

I'm sorry but unfortunately I can't help you further, then. My knowledge of audio technology is still quite limited and reading me blabbering the same thing over and over like a broken record won't help you.
How much did the HyperX cost again? $60? In my honest opinion thats a hell of a deal, I'd buy it in an instant and if it's only $60, if I didn't like it, it'd go into the trash can (or sold again). If you don't max out your budget right at the start, you can always upgrade.

And just because you've used some electronics, shouldn't make it worth any less money. So you should be able to expect to get the purchasing price back.

On another note, what do you currently use?

Edit: Ah now I get your point, you're "afraid" (for lack of a better term) that you will like the HyperX headphones, even tho in comparison they'd be below average (this is not a fact, this is an assumption made only for this statement, I don't actually know how the HyperX headset compares) and you just didn't know anything better, that's why you're shooting high with the DT 990 right from the start, to make sure you get a guaranteed very good audio setup, so that you have a baseline to compare other hardware to.

Well this is merely speculation, please do not take any offence if I am mistaken.

No offence taken at all. I don't use anything now. I used to long ago when i was a console gamer and loved it. I wanted to get back into that. Afraid isn't the right word lol, in comparison they are below average but i know they are still great headsets. I was sort of thinking oh they're cheap and a great steal which is why i brought it up. Now if i did shoot straight to the DT990 from the start i would have a baseline for other hardware. The way i'm thinking currently is mine as well get the best i can get instead of buying the HyperX and later on wanting to get even better hardware. Waste money that way. Mine as well get it now. Money doesn't grow on trees for me, i just so happen to have saved up the money for all this so its kind of like a reward. Know what i mean?

I do. At first I was also diddling around with cheap headsets (Siberia V2, Sennheiser PC323D and some others don't even remember the names) and in the end they were all shit, so I went with Custom One Pros and Q701s.
I certainly have no right to tell you not to do it the way you want ;)

Also I would recommend looking into the Audioengine D3.. Read/Watch some reviews about it. It's a DAC/AMP but really compact and is USB powered. It's more expensive than the FiiO E10 (about the same as an E17) but it seems to pack quite a punch and is pretty well received.

Think i'll try for the Dt990s and e10k. I doubt i'll get the modmic now. I'll wait for that another time as i don't need that now.

Thanks for the help all! Appreciate it!

So you ended up going for it? Good for you mate, make sure to tell us about your experience; always exciting when someone new tries hi-fi for the first time :D

Also, a modmic isn't your only option... I personally have a condenser mic hooked up to a mixer at home, but in the past I've used £10 desktop mics and they've got the job done if placed correctly. Good luck dude

I haven't found any mics that work well.. any recommendations? If its cheaper than by all means share! I was looking for a mic with a line mute option and cancels out background noise and couldn't find anything.

If I remember correctly I used to use something called a ''Logitech desktop usb microphone''... silver base, with a green mute button. Was around £10 off amazon and it did the job decently. I also have mates that swear by the ''zalman clip on mic'', which is something like £6 on amazon. At the end of the day, it's only VOIP so there's no real point having super mic quality and then having the application destroy it, leaving it sounding like a train station tannoy anyway. The only reason I have the setup I do is because it doubles as an amateur studio from time to time, so it's convenient.

Yep, that's the one. Apparently it's a little tricky to make it all look neat and work seamless, but once it's setup the audio is good (literally just asked my mate how the mic was 2 seconds ago)

How would i get it so when someone talks i get the audio into the headset? And it's good at blocking background noise?
