ATI Reworking R600 GPU

They aint dropped the ball tis it's out and underperforms the G80 
I wonder how much of a hit the R600 is going to be considering:
- Its farking long and wont fit in with everyones systems
- It needs stupid amounts of power requiring almost everyone to buy a new PSU
- It sounds like its gonna run insanely hot (after all, where is the 300w gonna end up)
- Its well behind the G80 in terms of release date.

I certainly wouldn't want a foot long radiator with 2/3 power cables going to it inside my PC no matter what the performance was.

While I'm an nVidia fan, I was hoping the R600 would give the G80 a run for its money. The nVidia/ATI rivalry has pushed graphics development at an amazing rate; it's nice when the latest cards out just beat the previous ones, it pushes the other company to make something better

Agreed. I'm personally not a fan of either - I just tend to go for whatever is the fastest or best value at the time. If the R600 does push Nvidia to make a faster card (which will hopefully be smaller and consume less power than the r600) then i think i'll take one

You don't know whaether the r600 is gonna compete properley with the G80 yet. don't write ATI off just yet peeps 
I went with the 7900GT's because they're smaller and cost a good deal less than the GTX's, and still deliver some outstanding performance. These foot-long GPU's have got to go, same with slot-hogging cooling solutions. The power consumption is way too high, didn't they get the memo that less watts/volts is in vogue for processors? It's all gotten to the point of ridiculous.
If ATI drops the ball again I will be really miffed, it looked like they were on the comeback trail after the Crossfire debacle of the last year. Gotta have competition, or (we) the consumers get to put up with whatever the sole provider feels like giving us. (I happen to be a capitalist, and don't believe there is any such thing as a true 'monopoly'... but ATI better get on it before nVidia buries them.)
That said I want my new 8800GT's.
