Asus R9 290 Issues.....

Hi,

I have the Asus R9 290 and I brought it March this year to play the latest games such as GTA V for my System.

Very recently I've noticed my Computer getting VERY warm when playing this game and I'm pointing this in the direction that the Graphics Card could be funky but I need to establish that this is the cause.

Whats the best temp program for monitoring my gpu temps?

Cheers
Rob

Well you could just use Msi afterburner, GPU-z or something like Hwinfo. Too many out there.

I like to use Radon Pro at times too if it's not for overclocking

What kind of cooler is on your 290?

I've downloaded GPU-z now, it's just the stock cooler on there, will get back with results latter.

If it is the stock AMD cooler (or the basic DCUII one) it'll certainly be your GPU as neither cooler is any good.

That's what the stock cooler is

Asus R9 290 DirectCU II 4GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card

I brought this from Ebuyer so I can send it back for a replacement or what do you advise?

Might want to check your cases airflow. The Asus ain't that good tbh. Even if you send it back for a replacement the same thing will happen.

This Card was fine for the first many months since I had it, it's only recently I've experienced this issue.

I cleaned all the fans and case a couple of weeks ago, so it all seems fine......

OK firstly what do you mean by the "it gets very warm". What are the GPU temps. is the GPU heat output affecting your CPU? The OP is rather vague. I dont see why it would be surprising that your computer gets rather warm considering the cooler and the core.

Still since you say you didnt have this before, perhaps there has been a change in the ambient temperature? Any overclocking etc? I would also check for bitcoinminers (if you use utorrent)

You do know these gpu's run very hot up to 95 degrees celcius for the stock cooler so unless you have a decent cooler eg Sapphire (Tri X or Vapor X)or the Msi Lightning it will run hot.

Its deffinately the graphics card, when I often boot up I get nothing on display just a black screen I then power it down before I get display again.... so I will need to RMA it back to Ebuyer any recomendations for a replacement as the card is no longer in stock ?

390? thay will probably offer you one of these as its just a 290 but with more vram

Have you tried testing the graphics card in another rig at all? just be warned E-Buyer are not the best when it comes to returns so please do make sure your card is faulty before you RMA it as they will charge you £10 to return it for you if they find nothing wrong with it and make sure you Quote the sale of goods and services act to them . If however it is faulty and they offer you a 390 in its place make sure its a got a decent cooler on it like the sapphire Nitro Tri-x or the msi twin frozorV matey :) best of luck with this though dude :)

I very much know that it is the card going funky, so will contact them on Monday to arrange an RMA with them, will look at options for replacements in the meantime.......

Good luck with it mate and we are always here for advice on which manufacturer produces the best aftermarket coolers on graphics cards ;) although for AMD I must say I have never had a Sapphire card go wrong on me since I have owned one which is coming up to 4 years. My partner has a Sapphire HD7770 in her rig which was in mine 3 years ago in crossfire

Had a note back from Ebuyer to say it's faulty and its going to be sent back to the manufacturer for repair.... I phoned them to ask what the issue was, the guy on the other end had no idea... So we shall see what happens.

Seeming as you have had the card for a while, all they are required to do is get the card repaired and shipped back to you. There are so many problems with the 290/x that it wouldn't surprise me if the same happened again down the line. The cores run HOT on them, just ensure you have good quality cold air flow past the card when you get the card back.

Ebuyer suck so I wish you all the luck in the world.

Stopped buying from them ages ago, their customer service absolutely sucks.

I ordered a £3500 PC and they sent the parts with Yodel. Two of the boxes arrived torn open and one was crushed. Thankfully all of the parts were OK but yeah, wouldn't buy from them again.
