Asus P67 M/boards advice for first build

Hi,

I’m about to build my first ever rig and require your advice on a number of components. I will be using either a 2500k or 2600k processor with a Noctua NH-D14 and I intend to overclock the system.

So to start with I am considering the following M/B’s.

Asus P8P67 Rev3

Asus P8P67 Pro Rev3

Asus P8P67 EVO Rev3

Asus Sabertooth P67 Rev3

The main contenders are the Pro or Sabertooth. Is the Sabertooth a better board.

Your advice will be appreciated and I thank you in advance.

Hey mate

Get the 2500k because theres very minimal difference between the two. Sabertooth is more expensive then the pro but doesn't have a particularly good colour scheme. Have you looked at the gigabyte z68 ud5? Just giving suggestiions

Hi Snakebite

If your building a gaming pc then difference between the 2500K and 2600K is hardly noticeable so save the £ and as Eleanor said I would also go with the Sabertooth out of the two.
 
Don't go for the standard model if you're ever going to run more than one graphics card.

The difference between the EVO and PRO at face value seems to be that the EVO has a better heatsink and 2 LAN connectors.

Personally, I'd say if you want to use the D-14 go with the PRO, if you don't mind changing to face down cooler then go for the Sabertooth. You could however use a D-14 on the sabertooth but then you should mount that little fan to it which I wouldn't be keen on but this is your rig not mine.

With regards to the 2500K vs 2600K, whilst there is next to no difference between the two when gaming, the 2600K does have twice as many threads as the 2500K so if you do any sort of rendering or stuff along those lines then there will be a difference in performance.

I'd run it with a D14 without the shroud.

I would just go with the Sabretooth with the D14 and stick a 50mm fan on the back of the mobo it's not like you will see it when it's in the case and I doubt you would be able to hear it either.

Appreciate all your advice. I definitely want to run a Noctua NH-D14. Before I edited my first post because I thought I had included something stupid by asking if the Sabertooth could be used without the Armour as I personally don’t like it, also I did not want to run a small fan, and Sheroo turns up with a picture of it naked, cheers for that.

I agree the P8P67 Pro looks better and the Sabertooth colours suits the NH-D14.

Rig will be for gaming, some photo editing and general usage. What are your thoughts on Mushkin ram kits, I would like the ram to fit under the NP-12 fan without the need to move it up, I think Mushkin ram fit without a problem. I would have gone for Corsair Dominator or Vengeance but I think the heat sink on either will foul the fan when in the first slot and it would look odd if I remove the heat sink from one ram module.

Mushkin ram gets great reviews and has good customer service. I would go with 8/4GB Mushkin Ridgeback tight timings and low volts if you wanted to over-clock in the future.

Found these G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 1.5v Latency 9 in blue that would go well with the Asus P8P67 Pro. Would these fit under the NP-12 fan of the Noctua NH-D14 without moving the fan up? Other option is Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 8GB (2 x 4GB) 1.65V that as far as I know fits ok and would look ok in either mainboard.

I have seen videos of ram being used at 1.65v. Could you tell me if it is ok to run ram with 1.65v volts on these boards as I have read somewhere that the recommended is 1.5v, Also is there any advantage in going for either of these voltages and is it worth going for ram with Latency 8.

Karlos, I will be using a single 24” monitor and thanks for your input and heads up that the standard board can’t run dual cards.

Choosing parts is like being in a sweet shop, what do you buy but at least in the sweet shop I would know what I was looking at.

The Ripjaws will fit under the D14 I have them under mine on a P8P67.

1.65v rAM will run fine no probs just don't go above 1.65v not that there is any need to but I just thought i'd mention it. The only advantage between 1.50v and 1.65v is the lower voltage, the difference between CL8 and CL9 would be unnoticeable as well tbh but if you can get it for a decent price you may as well.
 
I went with an upgrade to my ailing P55-UD6/I7-870 setup that was faulting for along time

new upgrades I7-2600K (oc'd to 4.4), Asus P8P67 Deluxe Revision 2 B3 steppingg, 8GB of G-Skill 2133 - Ripjaw (low profile)

Noctua ND-H14 cooler and a newer Kingston 128GB V100-S2 SSD and am pleasantly suprised.

Right out of the box once all setup it OC'd from 3.4ghz to 4.4ghz without an issue. and runs at around 40degrees centigrade idle and not alot higher under load. Have only had one freeze since last weekend.

The SSD isn't as top notch as i thought it would be but it's still performing better then any Sata would.
