Asus P5W DH + Retail Conroe BIOS Issues

Well I disconnected the lot, to one stick of ram, nothing, removed gfx card hoping for beeps, nothing.

Looks well deaded. Pretty uncool but... c'est la vie.

Anyone got a direct contact for Asus in Australia that I can call up and whimper at? :D

You know I'm by no means a huge tinkerer with PCs now... but I've set up more than I care to think of and jumped on board with the overclocking along with many others when the cel300a were around and flashed bioses many times over the last decade or so... but this is the first time I've had a deaded mobo as a result of one.

And it had to be on probably the most expensive board I've bought!?! Ach...

Try taking out the battery againg and switching the clear CMOS jumper. This time just walk away from it for an hour or two, watch some TV or something. Then come back and try it again.

Unexplainably this has worked so many times for me on my nF4 DFI mobo's, who knows maybe it will work for you. Just another suggestion mate.

Hope ya get her sorted.

seen it work manymany times on msi's boards too.

Well I left it like that overnight and set at it this morning with no joy.

Also I used the CD with the BIOS on it... you know, that CrashFree BIOS function thats supposed to boot from it if the BIOS gets corrupt... and nada.

I've borrowed a USB flash from work and will try that too but I'd say the BIOS setup was faulty (given indicators before my flashing attempt) and my flashing it killed it fully.

Possibly I'm trying to justify things or let myself off the hook but to me thats a motherboard function that isn't working as stated.

Ahh I love the retailer I got it from. I was honest about the behaviour I was experiencing and what happened when I flash and how the CrashFree BIOS thing isn't doing it's job and they said to just bring it back for a replacement and that it was in short supply just now so if I want it now I can swap for another board.

Well it was definitely an ex-mobo and the shop didn't have stock and wouldn't get for 2 weeks but they happily gave me the option of a full refund or choosing something else.

I took the refund and went to another shop that happened to have some stock (amazing!) paid a bit extra and am now sitting in the new system.

Fingers crossed this one does better! :D

So you got your system running then? Gratz! Please post up your OC results, benches etc. Also check out the Conroe overclocking thread and post ur results there :)

Not able to create a disk

I appreciate the effort put into helping P5W + Conroe folks like me who are dealing with an incompatible bios.

My first attempt at saving the .iso file posted on the overview page left me with a 72kb corrupted file. I signed up so I could download the .zip file in this thread and it included a 1,490kb file. Just to be sure, I tried the overview page ISO file download again and this time it came across as the same size file as in the .zip file.

Nero 6 happily burns a CD from the .iso image file, but the resulting disk shows 1.5MB data size with no actual files visible (hidden or otherwise). The P5W doesn't boot from the disk. The disparity between the actual disk capacity and the reported data on the disk appears to indicate something wrong - my first guess is my burn settings aren't working.

I'm contacting Asus support for a bios chip this morning, but I thought I'd let you know what I've experienced attempting to create the boot CD to flash the P5W bios.

Followup

I looked at both of the 1.5 MB .iso files via WinRAR, and they both show only an empty folder as contents.

Hi There.

The files are stored in a boot sector of the CD, hence you won't be able to see them without the right software :)

As long as the CD is burnt and it shows ~1.5mb usage, you should be able to boot from it.

Thanks for the quick reply

It sounds like the CDs are probably okay, so the lack of response from my system build is likely another issue. I'd like to thank you again for your efforts. Asus is sending me a free bios chip. The Asus USA policy is now to send a chip free with ground shipping. There's a $20 charge if you need it sent overnight.

Wish me luck...I may need it!

Hey guys =]

I'm new to all this, when I plugged everything up and power it on, my monitor stays at blank (black) does that mean my P5W version does not support Core 2 Duo?

How can i fix this problem if i can't see anything at all?

thanks in advance.

Ok.... uhmmm.... so I guess why all i see is the black screen is because my bios are not new enough? I'll have to get a new bios chip from ASUS right? and i assume the way to swap the chip are easy, you just pop the old one out, then pop the new one in? yes? i really hope so.....

Yeah it certainly sounds like your board has a really old BIOS version onboard. Get in contact with Asus and have them ship you a new chip.

Once you get it its quite simple to swap them over. You just need to lever the existing one out with a small screwdriver.
