Resident Newb
As with every generation of cards ROG is always there, A little faster this time as we had to wait until nearly the end of the 700 series for the last Matrix card.

Asustek Computer on Wednesday unveiled its new graphics card that has all chances to become one of the best graphics cards for overclocking ever produced. The Matrix GTX 980 boasts not only a powerful DirectCU II cooling system (featuring two fans and five heat-pipes) and custom design of printed-circuit board, but it features extremely sophisticated 14-phase voltage regulator module (VRM) that can do magic things for overclockers as well as some other technologies for extreme overclockers.

Matrix GTX 980 Spec Overview

  • Nvidia GTX 980 GPU with 1342 MHz GPU Boost Clock
  • 4GB, 7010 MHz (effective) GDDR5
  • 3 x DisplayPort, 1x HDMI, 1x dual-link DVI-I display outputs
  • ROG color-coded load Indicator
  • ROG Edition GPU Tweak
  • DirectCU II cooler with CoolTech fan, 10mm matt-black heatpipes
  • Extreme OC Features: Memory Defroster, Safe Mode, DIGI+ VRM power control with 14-phase Super Alloy Power and Black Metallic capacitors.

The digital 14-phase VRM is based on concrete-core chokes, solid-state black metallic capacitors and hardened MOSFETs. The board features two 8-pin PCIe auxiliary power connectors that can deliver up to 300W of power to the graphics board (in addition to 75W supplied through PCIe x16 slot), one 4-pin Molex connector for memory defroster power loop. When cooled to sub-zero temperatures during extreme overclocking, the memory defroster keeps the memory chips just above freezing, preventing cold bugs from hindering overclocking.

The Asus ROG Matrix Platinum GeForce GTX 980 4GB will be the most powerful Nvidia GM204-based graphics card in Asustek’s lineup. The graphics processor of the monster graphics adapter is rated to run at up to 1342MHz out-of-the-box, a significant increase from 1216MHz recommended by Nvidia.

The ROG Matrix Platinum GTX 980 is the fourth GeForce GTX 980 graphics card in Asus’ lineup. The company carries a reference GeForce GTX 980, Strix GTX 980 with DirectCU II cooler and Poseidon GTX 980 featuring a hybrid cooling solution that use similar PCBs with 10-phase VRMs as well as the new ROG Matrix Platinum GTX 980 card that sports a brand-new printed-circuit board with 14-phase VRM as well as the DirectCU II cooling system.

The card is due for review between now and next week according to various forums and the source article.

I am quite disappointed by the clocks on this card.

Here is a screenshot of my reference EVGA 980 SC cards running @stock.

Check out the clockspeeds on my reference cards, they are exactly the same as this new Asus card.

I hope the new Matrix 980 card overclocks better than some of the Matrix cards I have owned as they were very disappointing.

Maybe you guys should have an internal thread somewhere to sync each other before posting duplicate threads :)

I would love to see an overkill video from Tom with X99, 5960x and 3 or 4 way SLi with these in it.... :p

The Asus card isn't really meant to be used at stock, It's built from the ground up to be used under LN2 and with the 780 Ti Matrix Platinum my brother has he can go to 1340 core 24/7 stable and that didn't exactly have jaw dropping base or boost clocks :)

The 7970 and 290X Matrix cards were pants though, Like utter crud :(

7970 and 290X Matrix were let down by the silicone....

I guess Ill have to post pictures of the twins soon......

I had 3 Matrix 7970s and none of them were much good.

I ended up giving the last 2 away.

Worse still there was something wrong with all the Matrix Platinum 7970s, if you ran them at the same clockspeeds as a normal HD 7970 in half the benches they actually performed worse than the standard cards.

I would love to see an overkill video from Tom with X99, 5960x and 3 or 4 way SLi with these in it.... :p

Anything in particular you want to know in the way of benchmarks/games on quad 980/5960X ?

I don't do videos or reviews though.:D

Isnt this just like the Ti version we saw before? Not any of these cards would be very good for us regular users - even if we did slap a block on it.

I'm glad it looks identical to the 780Ti I just bought, now hopefully it's really expensive while being only incrementally better and then I can still live with myself. :)

Had a mate that just bought the Ti version before the 9xx series was anounced.... but after seeing the benchmarks then all of the ti owners can be that pissed.

I feel a bit left out as I am sitting on a regular 780 and bought it at the peak of the $$ war....
