ASUS/EVGA gtx 780 vs asus 290

I would choose a 780 but definitely not an EVGA ACX cooler. The cooler running 780 makes for a more refined card especially when comparing reference cards. Even the very best aftermarket coolers for the 290's don't seem to have the job nailed. I would go Sapphire 290 or Asus/MSI 780 or any of the reference cooled 780's they are great, the MSI Lightning is my personal favourite 780 if going for one of the high end variants.

so the asus 780 is a very good choice?

I haven't had any personal experience with Asus cards or coolers but as always I would say check out some decent reviews. I don't know if you mean the reference cooler or the Direct CUII, or the poseidon, you could be a bit more specific with what your considering, 'an asus 780' could be about 4 different cards.

Actually there are a few 290s which run cooler than ref 780s :P. Namely the Sapphire 290 tri-x/vapor-x and the Powercolor PCS+ 290. The Asus 290s are crap as well I should add.

Ref cooled vs ref cooled 780 easily wins though.

OP, its pretty much a matter of what games you pay/what you think looks better in your rig. the 290 draws much more power and puts out more heat but is mostly faster while the 780 is pretty much the opposite.

I'm talking about the asus 780 direct CUII

If you're gonna cough up enough cash for a GTX 780 you might as well get a 290x instead. They cost the same but the 290x is slightly faster and sometimes you can find them cheaper than 780's.

Evga is my preferred brand and has the best customer service so that makes me lean to the 780 but if you don't care about a particular brand, a 290x is a better way to go for the same money.

well, i'm buying second hand and i cant find any cheap 290x second hand :(

Ah then in that case go with the cheapest. They're both about the same in terms of performance but the 290 should be a little cheaper because of the mining collapse. I'd rather have the 780 for a little more refined drivers and little better overclocking/cooling but if you can get a good deal on a 290, no reason at all not to get one.

its simple go for the 780 evga ive got one you can play any game on this card personaly im not a amd chipset fan NVidia all the way

well like I say I prefer NVidia over amd its also I prefer intel over amd in my opinion nvida chips set are better than amd amd runs very hot and tends to be a little slower some say nivdia runs slow but ive had both chips sets and I prefer the nvida they are more reliable that's my opinion .

I'm not even going to bother arguing with you. Just say that you've had a better experience with Nvidia in the future as the temperature thing isn't always true and the gpus are faster in different circumstances :P.

I have two Asus DCII 780's love them. If I were to buy them again I'd probably get EVGA 780's just because of the reference PCB and the better warranty service otherwise I'd go for classifieds as they're more or less the same size as DCII's and yeah better performance and warranty service.

Bottom line is I have had a very good experience with Asus' cards. So I have nothing bad to say on that front. The only reason I'd go classified is for performance increase and ACX because of cheaper water blocks and better warranty service.

Hope that helped a little.

sorry for late replies, i think that the 780 is the best choice for me, because its cheaper, use less power and heat and i do like the nvidia technoligies. do you agree?
