Around £1500 for a build! Help me spend it!

If you drive the 250/600 ohm versions with a powerful amp they will outperform the 80's, but only if they are provided juice.

Not as well as a proper amp. Its getting power from a 1x PCI lane and not mains, like amps do.

Well Stereophile ( http://www.stereophile.com/content/asus-xonar-essence-ststx-soundcards-follow-september-2010 ) said this:

And the fact that their maximum output level can be adjusted to match the impedance and sensitivity of your 'phones

The output impedance of the ¼" headphone jack was 10.7 ohms at all frequencies and settings, which is usefully low.
Not to sure what this means  .

Thats just the impedance of the jack. If you insufficiently drive the 250's their bass will be poor, they will be quiet and wont sound like they should.

Ok, so the 10.7 ohms on the jack that the card produces isnt high enough for 250ohm headphones?

No, it means the jack on the headphones causes 10 ohm of impedence.

From Asus's website:

Built-in headphone amp
A high-quality TI TPA6120A2 headphone driver supports headphones up to 600ohms of impendence with lower than 0.001% distortion. Drive your headphones as intended without additional amplification

So i think 250 ohms headphones should be fine.

Up to you, but as I said, without A PROPER AMP the 250's won't sound as good as from a soundcard.

wow that's a hefty sound set up. i'm assuming you do music production etc. on your pc as well coz for gaming surely that's overkill. (very jealous though)

I don't do anything with music apart from listen to it!

Thing is i see the sound card as an investment, it should do me for at least the next 5-6 years and the headphones i just want quality and thats what i found.
