APU or FX?

Hi guys. I'm putting together a build for a family friend for her son. It needs to be as cheap as possible but I don't want it to be a pile of c***. I'm pretty certain on it being an amd build. I'm not sure whether to go with an a8 6600k or an fx 6300. He want to do some gaming on it so I thought the apu would be better but then I thought about just adding a gpu like a 7770 but this would add alot to the cost.

So pretty much, is it worth adding 80 quid to the cost for the difference. I doubt it will be any intensive gaming for now anyway.

depends on the games he will be playing, older games or running games at a lower res + settings i would go for the APU + lower GPU.

on aria you can get A6-6400k, GA-F2A85X-D3H and HD 6450 (to crossfire with the GPU on APU) for £149 (inc. vat and delivery).

Thats the thing. I'm not sure what games he will be playing. He plays runescape and that at the moment but i'm not sure if he would play something more intensive in the future. How do the apu's perform with something like a 7770 if i was to add it in the future if he needed the extra power?

He's 14/15 I think. It'll be used for schoolwork alot but I doubt it'll be anything like bf3 at the moment.

If you put in a 7770 you won't be able to x fire with the apu, thus rendering the GPU cores on the apu sorta useless.

You could go for am3 socket and run a phenom 2 x4 + 7770, the 4 cores will be enough for games and for work.

If you added a budget I'm people will spec a few builds for you.

with a 7770 you cannot run it cross-fired with the apu, this makes the 6300 the better choice because its a stronger cpu.

The only thing is that it is a fair bit more expensive with the 7770 so I won't add it straight away. Will the 6300 integrated do for a while?

After reading some stuff I don't think that FX processors support on board graphics( I may be wrong I'm not 100% sure).

I didn't see your comment Watsyerproblem:)

i think the only way to use integrated graphics with an fx chip is if the gpu is integrated into the motherboard, so you can only use a 700 or 800 series board with integrated gpu that has a black am3+ socket.

I think that's what i'll end up doing. He doesnt need massive performance really. I'll see how costly it is when I get round to getting the mobo and cpu. It'll only be a couple of parts a week.

well then get an i3 + b75 mobo. performance its between the fx 4300 and fx 6300(better then 6800k) and has preety decent integrated graphics.until he will get the 7770.
