**********UPDATE: Check out post #11.

This is a compliment review to ionicle's MBP review found here:

http://forum.overclock3d.net/index.php?/topic/39546-apple-macbook-pro/

I just received my MBP today. This is replacing a 4.5 year old ASUS laptop that has been great, but is showing it's age.

Specs:

Late 2011 Model MacBook Pro

15.4" Antiglare Widescreen 1680x1050 LED backlit

2.5GHz i7-2860QM CPU quad core with HT

4GB DDR3

256GB SSD

SuperDrive (DVD burner)

Backlit keyboard

Intel HD Graphics 3000

AMD HD 6770M

On to the pics!

Turning it on starts you out with the typical OSX setup:

Apple charges $200 for 8GB of RAM so I purchased the memory separately for $50 and installed myself. To install the memory you start by flipping the laptop over. Notice that the bottom has no vents or fans. This is great for your lap as you don't have to worry about covering anything up.

To remove the bottom, you simply take out the 10 screws. The bottom aluminum plate then pops off to reveal the following:

The inside looks just as good as the outside IMO. Everything is laid out perfectly and the black PCB really sets everything off. It's a shame you can't see this normally.

Here's a pic of the SSD. It's a Toshiba and looks like it has 220MB/s read and 180MB/s write. Nothing blazing fast, but perfect for this laptop:

This will be mostly used for work so installing Windows 7 is a must. Apple makes it very easy. You start by launching Boot Camp Assistant from Utilities. I made sure to run System Update first.

IMG_0578.JPG

Setup downloads the Windows support files. You can save it to a CD/DVD or a flash drive. I opted for the flash drive.

IMG_0580.JPG

When the download is finished, installation can begin, after you pop in the Win7 disc

Setting up Windows 7 from this point should seem familiar:

Windows installed and sitting on the desktop:

To install the drivers, you run setup from the flash drive:

Not sure why it's installing an nVidia driver here:

Once setup is finished and a restart completed, you can run Windows as normal. This includes games, benchmarks, or any other normal Windows applications. This is not Win7 emulated, this is a normal install of the OS running natively on the MBP.

The entry price of a laptop like this is not cheap, but you are getting a high end laptop. Not just high end hardware specs, everything about this laptop is high end. The screen is the best I've seen on a laptop. The colors are vibrant and everything is crisp. The keyboard is also the best I've seen on a laptop. The keys are very comfortable to type on and don't feel cheap. Back lighting is a nice touch as well.

Gestures on the trackpad are useful too. I'm not finding I miss buttons. Zooming in and out, rotating images, flipping between full screen apps, scrolling etc. can all be performed using gestures. If you have used an iPad or iPhone, this works exactly the same.

The aluminum case is what really makes the whole kit feel high end. All my previous laptops have been your typical plastic builds. Some cheap, some rather expensive. My last laptop came very close to the price of this MBP in fact, but doesn't even compare in quality. Having never used an Apple laptop before this, I can honestly say I'm impressed.

If Apple keeps going with this kind of quality and attention to detail, I will be a Mac user for life. Well, at least on the laptop side. They would have to pull my PC from my cold dead hands before I'd give it up.

After using this MBP for a little while now there are a few things I want to add. I'm loving this laptop, but there is one thing I hate. Apple does not allow Windows to use the graphics switching. The Intel HD 3000 is completely hidden from Windows. This results in worse battery life in Windows and a hotter laptop. Not really a problem as I use Windows for work at my desk so it's plugged in. Apple could enable this with an update to the EFI, but after some research it looks like this has been an issue since the early model 2011 MBP so it's something Apple is well aware of by now.

Other little annoyances are the lack of some keys on the keyboard. There is no end or home key. It's amazing how much I use these keys, I had no idea. Thankfully you can use fn+[left or right arrow] to do home and end. Also, because the delete key is actually backspace, if you want to shift-delete something in Windows to bypass the recycle bin you need to now use shift+fn+delete. Lastly, instead of Windows Key+Pause break to bring up system properties on a Windows PC you now need to use Command+fn+esc.

None of these are huge issues at all, but require learning and memorizing a new way to do something.

I still love the screen and keyboard and everything is blazing fast. Virtualization works in Windows 7 through bootcamp so I can still use Virtual PC.

Pros:

  • Solid uni-body aluminum construction
  • Excellent Screen
  • Keyboard and touchpad are a joy to use
  • Can install and run Windows 7 natively
  • Great battery life
  • Extremely long cord on adapter
  • Solid bottom, no vents or fans to worry about covering
  • Speakers are much better and much louder than typical laptop speakers

Cons:

  • Price
  • No Blu-Ray option
  • No USB 3.0
  • No graphics switching in Windows 7, HD 3000 hidden from Windows

Thanks for reading!

I would love to have one of these with win7 on it because of the build quality.

How heavy is it? (don't tell me in kg/lbs because i cant compute how heavy it would be XD)

I guess you could compare it to an iPad or iPhone. When you first pick it up it's surprising how heavy it is for it's size. It's more of a solid heavy feel though, not a "damn, this thing is heavy" feeling.

The actual weight is 5.6 pounds so in reality it's not that heavy.

the 13 inch one you can pick up with one hand, its heavy, but its ok at the same time

the best bit is you cant hear it creak or flex like a dell/acer/asus/msi/etc ....it just lifts, like a lump of metal

im thinking about installing windows vista on my imac now ive seen how easy it is

and im sure it'd spank my main pc to high heaven...

nice review

i havent upgraded anything on mine yet, but it is somthing i am considering...

since you got yours with lion, like mine, you must have had the recovery partition? and no disks/usb disks with it?

id love to compare a startup time, i mean, i know they aint the exact same spec's but the SSD should make a massive difference?

my startup time is about 20 seconds from button to desktop

Yeah, no discs or flash drive.

I just timed a cold boot of lion. I hit 20 seconds as well, but that's with typing in a password. Probably more like 16-17 seconds then.

ahha, mine doesnt have a password, as this one doesnt leave the house...

take into account the bigger screen, with a bigger resolution? ....might take longer to load?...

im on 1280x800

obviously being a mac, it doesnt have a standard windows keyboard, so some small changes have to be made, i wonder how it would respond to a windows keyboard via usb.....

Works fine via USB. The keyboard on this mac is so nice to type on though, I'm not giving it up.

Also, you won't have the graphics issue on the 13" MBP as you only have a single graphics card. Have you given Windows 7/boot camp a try yet?

agreed, same, it is a superb keyboard

The last reply in this thread was in 2011, but this needs an update! I've had quite the ride with this computer....

So, this MBP worked great for about a year and a half. Hit about May 2013 and the trouble started. I was in Windows 7 during a normal work day and wanted to test some screen sharing via AppleTV from OSX so clicked the little bootcamp icon to reboot into OSX. On restart however, I was greeted with a blank screen. I held the power button until it powered off, waited a minute, then powered on the machine again. Same thing. I did this off an on for an hour or so and finally got it to start up and I was able to sign in. Within a few minutes however, graphical corruption and the machine hard locked. Looked like graphic card issues to me.

I tried all the NVRAM/PRAM reset stuff and nothing. Finally I called Apple and was told my warranty ran out at the 1 year mark and I hadn't purchased Apple Care so I was basically dead in the water. They tried a few things with me over the phone anyway and came to the same conclusion I did; hardware fault. They asked me to set up an appointment with a Genius (I hate this title) at my nearest Apple store. The nearest one is roughly 5 hours away. Luckily I happened to be traveling to a conference the next week (7 hours away) and there was an Apple Store there. The person on the support line set up an appointment for me.

A week later I arrived at the Apple Store and sat down with a Genius. He did all the same things I had tried and said the Logic Board would need to be replaced and it would need to be sent off. Oh and it would be $400 or so to fix. I arrange for the repair (and left credit card details) and left my MBP at the store.

A few days go by and I am back home and back to normal work. The repaired laptop arrived very quickly. They shipped it next day air to the repair facility, the repair facility fixed and shipped it back to me the day it arrived. Again, it was shipped next day air so in a total of 3 days I had it back. Best of all it was working again!

Let's fast forward another 4 months to the end of summer; MBP has been working flawlessy. I arrive at work eager for the day. I set up the laptop and turn it on, walk away, and go grab a Mountain Dew. When I get back to my desk the screen is blank. I powered it off and turned it back on again, same thing. I repeated this for about an hour and finally got to the desktop. A few minutes go by and I get graphical corruption and a hardlock. Same f-ing thing as a few months ago!!!!

I phone up Apple, they walk me through a few things only to tell me it needs to be sent in and have the logic board replaced again. Oh, and the last repair was only warrantied for 90 days so being it's been 4 months I'd need to pay for the repair again. @#%#$ #^#$ #$^@#%@#$.

I asked to speak to a manager and told him the story. He agrees that this is BS and Apple will cover everything this time. Sweet!

The next day an empty box arrives with a prepaid label and once again I send the MBP on it's way. 3 days later its back in my hands and working again. Finally I have a working laptop so hopefully no more issues!

Fast forward another 4 months...see a pattern yet? The damn thing does it again. Worked flawlessly for 4 months only to not boot up one morning. I powered it off and turned it back on again, same thing. I repeated this for about an hour and finally got to the desktop. A few minutes go by and I get graphical corruption and a hardlock. Same f-ing thing as a few months ago and a few months before that!!!! Again, I phone up Apple. This time they give me no hassle and agree to fix it once again for free. The next day an empty box with a pre-paid label arrives and I send it off. Three days later and my repaired MBP is back in my hands. Hopefully this is the last time I have to deal with this BS.

Fast forward to April of this year, so about 4 months since it was last repaired. Can anyone guess what happens? Yep, the #$*#$#@$%^$@##@$ piece of @$$^#@#$ is #@%&$# dead again!!!! I'm through with getting it fixed, I've had enough. I start shopping for a new laptop. I pretty much settled on a Dell Precision, but put off ordering because I was just too pissed off to deal with it.

In the meantime, I sent an email to the last tech I worked with at Apple Support. I let him know that the MBP died again and I do not want to get it fixed, I'm moving on. Thanks.

A couple days later I received an email back asking if I'd be willing to take a phone call. I replied saying that was alright and could take the call any time in the next few hours. About 5 minutes later I get the call. The tech on the line asks if this is the exact same problem as the previous 3 times it has died. I told him yes and we tried do a few troubleshooting steps only to find that none of them work. He said he would call me in a few days.

He did end up calling me back in a few days, had some good news and bad news. The tech said Apple will replace my MBP, but they do not have any of the Late 2011 models left (this was the bad news). The good news, I will instead receive a brand new current model 15" Retina MacBook Pro instead. Needless to say I was surprised. I received the final new model today. They did send me another one, but the order was messed up so I sent it back.

Anyway, the one I received in the end:

15" Retina Screen
2.3GHz i7
16GB RAM
512GB PCIe SSD
Intel Iris Pro Graphics
nVidia GT750M 2GB
USB SuperDrive

Quite the upgrade over what I had. I also purchased AppleCare (3yr coverage) immediately in case I have issues with this model too.

I'll probably do a quick review of this model as a lot has changed since the Late 2011 model. Some good some bad.

I was not expecting Apple to do anything about this. Every time they had fixed (3 times) the old MBP they really didn't have to as it was out of warranty. I've dealt a lot with HP and Dell and have never had them replace anything out of warranty on their dime. Finally replacing my lemon MBP with a brand new current model is way above and beyond. I'm totally blown away that this happened. Kudos to Apple's support staff.

Hopefully I have no issues with this new model. I believe the old model had poor cooling as it often ran hot and I think this is what led to the failures. Poor design IMO of the unibody chassis. The new design looks much better.

I have no idea if I'll go Apple again in the future, guess it really depends on how well this one behaves.

Wow, you don't really expect something like that. Especially when your MBP was a few years old. I would maybe expect them to do like for like. But that, that's really good of them.

While I have a personal dislike of all Apple products and a not so pleasant history with them, they really have gone beyond the call of duty with your case bravo indeed.

I've had a lot of issues with the Retina MacBook Pro I ordered late last year. I actually went through five of them, replacement after replacement due to messed up screens.

But throughout the whole thing I have to say Apples support is untouchable. They sent me a free gift worth £80 for my replacement problems, they had engineers look at and confirm the problems I had with the ones I sent back to them, they handled pickup from my home every time I had to return one (I ordered from the online store).

Similar with your situation, the first time you had to pay for the Logic board to be replaced but the subsequent times they paid and then they gave you a whole new machine even though you were way outside the warranty period.

It is this kind of no-nonsense support that keeps me coming back to Apple for laptops.

I'm glad you're enjoying your new Retina MacBook Pro it's a killer computer.

The model they gave you (late 2013) is the model i currently have for work, you will love it! I have nothing but good things to say about it tbh, and tbf this is coming from someone who couldn't stand mac a few years ago.

Whoah, nice rollercoaster there!

The thing with Apple is that they look after their customers well. I've heard quite a few times that Apple have just given people brand new current MBPs due to issues.

I'll be getting either a 13" rMBP or the high end 15" one Very early next year

That's pretty great of Apple.

It's strange how the laptop suffered from the exact/nearly identical problem after roughly the same amount of time. A good result in the end and hopefully the newer model isn't plagued by the same problem (it might last 8 months this time :p)

It's funny you post your story since my MPB is about 3 years old and is experiencing the same problems. I am assuming that it is my HHD but my wife just had her MBP in the apple shop for a logic board as well. Hers is only 1.5 years old. I was quite surprised when hers crashed and I poked fun at her and then mine took a dump as well... Karma sucks
