Any one tried a standing desk?

Iv been looking at a standing desk but unsure, My problem is I suffer from nerve damage as well as having metal pins in both my knees and a bad hip due a really bad motorbike crash when I was 21.

I have now got a mesh back chair but no matter what I do I'm in pain mostly lower back and neck, but if I stand up the pain goes, I should point out I am correctly sitting with the proper posture.

I have been looking up standing desk and doing as much research as possible but would be nice to get feed back from those who have tried one.

Thanks for any info

Umm, I came across an article on Facebook before, regarding a professional gamer who games in a standing position.

He used to to do it sitting, like most people, but then wanted to try a standing position and after 2 years, he now prefers standing. In standing position, the blood in your body can circulate much more easily.
Sure, it will be quite a pain at first, but the more you do it, the more strength your body will gain from it, the easier it will be/feel and the more you'll get used to it.

I even think that Youtuber Levelcap has a standing desk and he more and more prefers it, from one of his videos. I know that this might not be that appropriate to post this here, but feel free to edit this post if the moderators feel it's in the wrong place. No harm or so intended though.

In your case though... due to your accident and the pain you're suffering from, I would advise you to talk to your doctor about it and see if it would be any better in terms of position of your body and maybe be better for your nerves etc etc.
This is pretty much all down to ergonomics, how you have your body in a specific position.

I'm no expert here, just know a very little that I'm trying to share with you... some maybe even say I'm way off here. But this is what I know and I thought I would share it with you.

But my advice to you, would be to talk to your doctor first and consult with him/her about this as he/she will most likely know a lot more about your condition than I do. And give you a proper valuation if it will be better for you or not.

But if you ask me, it will probably be a pain in the beginning, but once you get used to it... you might even like it better than sitting down. And form what I've heard, it seems to be better than sitting, for the people that have tried it.

Hope this helped... or something :p

Thanks for letting me share!

Okay then, well is your doctors gives you a go, then go for it.

If you do mange to find his video, I even think he actually recommends a desk.
Although, I have no knowledge or experience with standing desks dude... but I'd advice to get a height adjustable desk though. So you can easily change the height of it, for both a sitting position to a standing one :)

I actually have a very tall desk in work, It's mounted to the wall with steel arms and is just below chest/rib height so typing is very easy, I work in a gym so sitting down as a PT is a big no no ^_^

Just choose a desk you like the look of *the top* and get some industrial strength LARGE brackets and maybe legs to be on the safe side with some big strong bolts.

I know what you mean there, I am in the same position myself, and have the nerve damage in lower back and problematic knees to say the least, let alone the medications that can interesting side effects shall we say

I have tried a standing position and I kinda have to keep moving every hlf hr or so else the pain goes from barely tolerable to well past excruciating to say the least, I have found that when I am building up, repairing or upgrading machines to be standing at my bench I made that it just over waist heigh, and hlf sitting (tall padded stool) to be my best option, if playing games, then need to be seated, so a padded office chair with adjustable backrest is my best option with plenty of room for my legs to be out straight or to at least move around a bit.

Hope this helps you find a comfortable medium for yourself.

Have you tried one of these?

It takes the strain off your back and places the load between your buttocks and shins, you are effectively stood (but not stood) it's a strange feeling but very supportive.

N.B it's not strenuous on the knees either.

Unfortunately mate, for me I can't use one of those as have restricted movement in leg, so wouldn't be able to bend leg enough to, I can't ride a bike either no more due to it

That sucks dude, what about a breakfast bar stool with a separate foot rest?

I got a large modified cushioned stool for just such occasions as being outside to use bench, it now angled so can stand and kinda lean my skinny hairy ass on it :p

**Edit**

The only really comfortable position I can get into is horizontal, with kinda propping myself up behind shoulders so as the small of back is resting on something to take strain and pressure off it. (Hence why I disappear sometimes for few days depending on how rough I feel, although my tablet is always handy for reading, but when it gets that bad, being sociable is last thing you want to do)

I haven't, have been suggested one before but like the other user some times i Get lower back pain and neck pain, But Im willing to give any thing a try

I use a desk with adjustable height in work. Its perfect when I get a sore back from sitting too much and vice versa.

little pricey but a worthy investment to avoid the pain you must get.
