AMD's Vega GPUs will ship in Q2 2017

I can see the problem being that if Ryzen doesn't live up to the hype, and people have been waiting for it to upgrade, they could just go with intel and nvidia because they are fed up with the wait

Well on that, it might not be as good as the hype, but unlike with vishera we are actually seeing it in action before we get the chance to buy it, with what asus have shown for an amd board equal to a z270 board then its not looking bad.

But at the end of the day some peoples hype will always be more then what any company can deliver. As for people who have waited for amd flipping, mm i doubt it in the main part. Ppl have waited since vishera for an upgrade, and after waiting that long i dont see them jumping to intel just because it might not beat outright a £1100 cpu.

As for vega who knows, its an unknown, on paper its black magic to me, but if anything amd gpus are doing something wierd right now, there getting better with age, mostly due to software changes but we are in strainge times right now.

The only hype AMD have given Ryzen is a real world benchmark (and later the exact settings) that show it being ever so slightly faster than Broadwell E. You can even download the benchmark, change the settings and run it yourself.

That's not hype at that point. If they have provided evidence then it is proof. Only the most cynical would try and deny it.

Any one who doesn't like AMD would have already upgraded dude. I've seen loads of it already. Any one who buys Nvidia GPUs will likely want to stay with Nvidia. That is why the GTX 260 sold more than the Radeon 5850, even though they were identical in price and the 260 was garbage.

You can lead a camel to water, but you can't make it drink - comes to mind.

It is enthusiasts who will buy Ryzen. Real enthusiasts, not enthusiastic fanboys. There is a massive, massive difference. A real enthusiast doesn't give a crap who makes what and will buy anything that offers better bang for buck. A fanboy enthusiast will buy the most expensive GPU Nvidia make, then call themselves enthusiasts.

That is why I have three rigs with AMD stuff in them. Either a GPU or CPU. Simply because I couldn't care that it's AMD, it just offered great VFM when I bought it :)

May is not too late in my opinion. Vega is still to show its teeth and could perform anywhere. On top of that we have no idea on its pricing. We've had no rumours on that front. I personally doubt we'll see it competing against a Titan XP, but it will likely beat a 1080 and probably come close to a 1080ti in certain instances at a cheaper price. I can only really speak for myself here, but above 1080 performance at the right price is excellent. I know it will last longer than a 1080, but I also recognise it'll be a year late to the game. If the 1080 had originally been cheaper, it would have been an amazing purchase and most would have upgraded by now. But it was just too expensive and alienated a lot of potential customers, all of which are now waiting for Vega. Nvidia were taking the micky with it. They were selling a midrange chip at enthusiast prices just because it performed above expectation and had no competition. It's like they said to themselves, 'Hey, this is a great GPU! Lets sell it at an exorbitant price and make a killing.' That's all well and good in less significant areas of industry and economics, but not on the scale we see here. Nvidia charging this much is because they can, not because they should.

I don't feel the Pascal refresh will to be all that impressive. I imagine it'll just be a slight clock increase with lower power consumption and a cheaper price. The important element is cheaper price. Nvidia could quite easily reduce the price of the 1080 so far that it knocks the wind out of the sales (pun not intended) of Vega 10, just as the GTX 980 was still very popular due to its price drop despite being weaker than the R9 Fury. Even if Vega 10 is as low as $500 (doubtful), all Nvidia has to do is reduce the 1080 down to $450 and it's still a competitive GPU, and with this refresh it might be possible for Nvidia to continue to make a tidy profit.

I don't think so either. At the end of the day it's not like Nvidia are going to make any serious moves any way. The 1080 is on a small die, easy to produce, good success rate from the silicon and they are charging the moon on a stick for it.

Why would you spend money pushing to change that? that's why there has been a huge delay on the 1080ti IMO.

So AMD can take their time with Vega because it is what it is now, and will be the same come June or whenever they decide to release it. I can't see Nvidia offering a huge improvement over what they have now until then any way.

All the time they can hang on charging six hundred notes for their mid range silicon the better.
