40% IPC jump is impressive, but that will still only put it in 2500k territory per core.

A big improvement, for AMD, for sure. But with newer/refresh Intel chips launching at a similar time, the gap will still be significant and growing once again.

Even if it puts it on par with Sandy IPC wise, it's not too shabby. Intel has had maybe on average a 10% IPC increase per generation, and with Kaby Lake still being 14nm, this Zen chip should at least be able to offer a viable alternative in the high-end of the mainstream market. Especially considering that newer games such as The Division are well optimized for many cores. As for the enthusiast market, I don't think AMD has anything to offer, especially when Skylake-E releases.

I'm not sure you can disregard the entire AMD zen lineup as uninteresting to the enthusiast market, 95W TDP for 16 threads is extremely interesting if that rumour is indeed true. Also the X99 platform is very expensive, if AMD provides a 16 thread cpu that has comparable price/performance ratio then id say they have a compelling product. An enthusiast is not defined by the amount of money they can spend

I was just using Intel's lingo of the different market sections. Intel refers to the Z170 platform as "mainstream", it's the high-end CPU's of this section (6600K/6700K) I expect the 8-core Zen to compete in, since it also happens to have around the same TDP. I agree, if priced correctly and if the IPC improvements are true, I don't see why it wouldn't be a good option. "Enthusiast" refers the X99/whatever Skylake-E will be on platform.

40% IPC improvement on the Kaveri should put it between the Ivy bridge and Haswell. With 8 cores it should be a very competent CPU.

Yes, but it's going to have to be a lot more than competent to make Sandy/Ivy Bridge and Haswell owners to switch. And there's plenty of those still around. It needs to be fast, cost effective and very overclockable.

The volume market is still in laptops, if AMD want a money maker they need to beat Intel at the performance per Watt ratio. And I think they have a good chance at this, due in part to the 14nm FinFet process and in part to the supposed architectural overhaul. Hopefully they get good yields from the start too.

That's true. And if their 14nm GPU's for laptops are any good they might finally see some positive numbers next year.

Yep if they can get power consumption down enough to get really competitive with Intel in the laptop segment, then they should have a winner.

40% improvement, 16 threads and if they come in cheaper than Intel, they could easily have a viable option on the market. Yeah 40% will put it a little faster than Sandy but you gotta think, Skylake ain't that much faster than Sandy. I think Zen could easily put AMD back up there on a competitive spot with Intel. Intel would still have the crown but AMD would be nipping at their heels again and that's when we all win no matter which brand we're partial to.

I just wish it was earlier than October. Getting tired of waiting. Not like my venerable 8350 isn't getting the job done, I just want a new toy.

Darn, It has been ages since I have done that.

OK for some reason this really cracked me up. Actually spit my beer out.

Early adoption

Though it might sound stupid I am going to be an early adopter of this new eight core amd cpu. I have had a huge number of amd six and eight core cpu's and every single one has overclocked okay and never had one die on me.
Intel have been spewing out new cpu's far too often in my opinion with no much in the way of performance gain each time. The 5820k is an amazing CPU but for me it makes buying any skylake absoletly pointless when they cost basically the same money.
I am waffling but just wanted to share my excitement for these new AM4 8 cores as I really want to see intel take a hit in market share so we can have them come out with something absolutely amazing at a cheaper than normal price.
