"AMD announced today that Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ processors, code-named 'Barcelona,' are planned for shipment in both standard and low power versions at launch later this summer."

Does appear their angle has moved to "better performance per watt" than "better performance per buck".

I dunno, it`s clever marketing wize. Probably create a niche or 2 to be fair. It`s an arguement `for` buying amd to a company perhaps.

Hmmm not for me. Afraid the only niche I want to be part of is the "better performance vs anything else"

If AMD's new proccy doesn't outperfrom Intels offerings then I'm not interested!

Good point to be honest!

I am not interested in how much power they take.. as long as they give some awesome performance..

The greens will kill me.. But, everyone knows my Climate change views! ;)

That`s very true tbh. Loads like to proclaim that they`ll recycle the odd cardboard package or what-have-u, but when it comes down to it - u offer a pc enthusiast a 16-core-5Ghz beast of an innefficient processor and they`ll take it everytime.

This is the approach GPU manufs need too switch too i think...

Designed to operate within the same thermal envelopes as current generation AMD Opteron processors,

Thats an interesting claim. Will they actually be able too be sufficiently cooled with those crappy old alu HFSs that come with the A64s/lower end optys?

i think both intel and amd are always looking at the power comsumptions of their new chips, so i'm predicting all new chips will use less power regardless.

I think people tend to switch sides constantly, when the Pentium D power consumption was through the roof, people complained. Now that the Athlon 64's are slow, but consume very little power, people complain. If someone gets both right then they complain that the other company doesn't have the same thing. If someone said to me here is a processor that outperforms your current one by 2 times but uses 10 times the power I wouldn't want it.

I don't see power consumption of CPUs or GPUs going down in the near future. Many people forget that we are really at an all time high with the Kentsfields, and I would expect the AMD to be worse since it has an integrated memory controller.

ATi and Nvidia should both just keep there current range up and do an AMD, just keep working at it, and working at it, until they have an 8800 and a 2900 that are so efficient, they only use somthing like 30W

I suppose if you have a big energy bill then 'performance per watt' and 'performance per buck' aren't that distinct. At least they're giving you the choice between standard and 'save the planet' versions.
