AMD to Axe Athlon Name

Welcome AMD Phenom X4 2500

We just got informed that after eight years of service, AMD is finally planning to retire the Athlon brand. Just as Intel made a super bold move and got rid of Pentium for its CPUs, AMD will introduce a new brand called Phenom when the K10 generation of CPUs is introduced.

There will be three flavours, the FX parts will be called the AMD Phenom FX, the quad core will be called Phenom X4 and the dual core, Phenom X2. The performance rating is gone for good.

The AMD Phenom X4 2500 should be the model name for the 2.5 GHz K10 quad core Agena CPU, but AMD hasn't made the final decision about the 2500 part of the model name.

All these CPUs are still scheduled for Q3

I see no reason i shall not be, im pretty much tied to my pc these days

what contact method u wanna use... skype? xfire? PM? IRc?

No tot keen on the new name tbh, but it's good to see taking a bold step with a new name. Hopefully it will bring us good things.

Think the name sounds ghey.

Times move on, but obviously this is a marketing thing. Athlon is no doubt a piece of history now, I`d prefer to refer to the new cpus as K10.

Phenom - wtEf. How about something a bit stronger sounding and bold - like Athlon ?

Meh we`ll get used to it.

i'm liking the fact they dont call them by there rated speed now, Caused no end of confusion for customers.

amd and intel should agree on a standard for the numbering

so an E6300 from intel, is equivilant to a 6300FX from amd, would sort out problems

i dont think it will, Think that may confuse people more. Keep the names completly different and then that makes people read the specs.

I don't think that would help. Then people would assume both processors are the same and just get either one, when really both are completely different.

As for the name, I don't know. Sounds weird now, but I think we'll get used to it, just like "Vista".

Buahah Windows ME lol. I remember when ppl said ME instead of M-E. Funny stuff. But still, i like Athlon. Its such a beefy cerative name.

The idea some1 suggested about making the numbers co-incide together, almost as a way that the `user` can make a comparison -

I read, when the XP+ versions of the AMD numbers first saw light of day that that was precisely what they were all about. Not as simple as I suggest, but something like Athlon XP 2600+ was the equiv of an Intel processor (flavor of the time) run @ 2.6ghz.

Of course, doing it at an initial stage is all well and good, but as years go by the numbers become less and less comparible or important.

U can`t for example draw any conclusions about a 4400+ Athlon x2 in terms of an Intel - unless u could say it`d be equiv to an E4400, which I pretty much imagine it wouldn`t be. Before the E4300 ranges, when they popularly had just the E6300 - it perhaps could have been a semi-sensible suggestion - but then along come Intel to blow that idea away.
