AMD RX470 - ASUS Strix and Sapphire Nitro Review

Brilliant little cards!

For those on a budget, these are really good cards. -performance on par with the 290x in some games-

Btw, have you recieved any RX 460 s yet Tom?

Absolutely awesome. The Nitro seems to be kicking the Asus into touch too. Got to be one of the best looking GPUs ever made too (the Nitro). It just has everything.

Is the 470 Nitro the same size as the 480 one, Tom? I'm waiting for the 460 Nitro myself to complete a Linux rig.

Nitro = £164.99

Strix = £188.99.

Sigh Asus. Sigh.

I noticed the Sapphire has a 8 pin while the Asus has a 6 pin power socket. price wise they are both the same price on OC UK.

being a bit of fan of asus I feel they let this 1 down with the looks and power limit.

Glad to see you get the Sapphire card in hope they will send you more in future

I got that wrong. £164.99 for a basic stock card, £188.99 for both the Strix and the Nitro.

I'd still take the Nitro though.

Crackin' little GPU. The original price was tad high, but AMD's choice to reduce the base price was very, very smart. £190 for the Strix or Nitro is solid value. It's basically 970 performance for £190 with a brighter future ahead of it. I'm stoked to see the 460 now. Both the 470 and 480 are awesome. I am still disappointed slightly by the power consumption, but it's progress nonetheless.

Very solid performance. Perfect 1080p card and i'd probably get this over a reference 480 tbh if i was at 1080p.

Just out of curiosity, the 8GB models of these cards are still running at the same memory speeds correct? Because from what I understand, the 470 is using the same chips all rated for 7Gbps but the 4GB(and probably 8GB) versions are just downclocked. And it seems all vendor cards have boosted them to the rated 7Gbps. Which is a smart move tbh. That's a pretty big bump in clocks and would definitely be noticed in scores.

Edit nevermind figured it out. 8GB cards are running at 8gbps, well the Nitro at least. Was the only one I could find so far. 4GB cards running at 7gbps.
Also, 8GB 470s in the US are priced at the same levels as reference 480 8Gb cards... Which means barely less than custom cards

Just run the tomb raider benchmark on my R9 270 and this virtually doubles what I get at 1080p all maxed

The 470 is surprisingly close to 480 performance. For an extra £30, if I could swing it somehow, I probably would get the 480 Nitro as it does offer slightly better value for money. Massive temperature difference though.

Little bit off topic but for Tom(TTL) and team; Any possibility of making like a googleDoc which has ALL the results from for example GTX6xx and AMD 7970s?

Im personally interested as im currently in the process of evaluating my upgrade from SLI 780s to potentially a 1080/Ti and the graphs dont really expand to cover the results for my 780s :)

If we can flash these, I wonder how far off performance would be. AMD giving out some nice easter eggs lately.

They have a history of doing so. Think(emphasis on think) the last time was a 7950 to a 7970 and then before that was 6950 to a 6970 of which I knew for a fact happened.

Still Its a bit dissapointing to see the Zotac 970 consuming less power while being able to offer similar if not superior performance.

Albeit the 470 has its merits, cost etc. Just surprising to see similar power consumption for similar performance for the 470 and 970..

Well It offers more performance from what i've seen. And even if wasn't like that, you're getting 970 performance for less than $200. That's insane when just 3 months ago, to get that peformance you had to pay nearly $400. Also put into perspective, compare that to AMDs previous 390 which had superior performance to a 970 but consumed at all times damn near 200 more watts. Now you're effectively looking at how far AMD has come, which is leaps and bounds ahead of Hawaii chips.

The 390 is a 3-year-old GPU, though. If they can't half the power consumption of a stupidly power hungry GPU after three years, something is wrong. On the other hand, the 970 is only 2 years old and Pascal has doubled performance with the same wattage. There's no denying that nVidia's GPU's are far superior when it comes to efficiency.

I never said they weren't.
You're making AMD sound worse than they are. Same could be said for them. Comparing to the 380, the 480 greatly improves performance to something akin to a 980/390x while at the same time also really reducing its power consumption. No it's not as much as Nvidia. But Nvidia decided to focus less on power consumption and instead on performance when it comes to 970/1070. That's the only other way to do it when moving to a smaller node.

Either you get double performance at same watt, or you can improve performance about 50% while at the same time reducing power consumption by about the same. AMD opted for that route, and imo was the smarter choice for this end of the market.
