AMD processor temps

Hi folks,

Does anyone have a high end AMD processer with watercooling. And could they tell me their average temps please? A friend has recently started watercooling and has an Amd 8550 fx 8 core watercooled and his temps reading shows it as 9ºc I calimed this was absolutely B-S but hes since changed his motherboard and it shows the same. Is this for real? Is that really how cool AMD processors run? I thought it was impossible to for your loop to be cooler than your ambient room temperature unless you were using ice chillers or something?

It is impossible for hardware to run cooler than ambient temps...

What kind of software does he use to monitor the temps and has he tried to stress test it and see if the temps changed?
 
presuming this is using something like speccy or cpu-z? If so it'll be wrong as AMD cpu's aren't very accurate at measuring temperatures (I'm running at 14C at the moment on a AIO cooler), either you add 10-20c to that measurement or you just check the motherboard's readout in the bios ( My motherboard gives me a readout of 30c, which is much more reasonable)
 
firstly we will need to know what he is using to get the temps?
those temps are impossibly low.

what cpu is he using?

My 1090t underwater at 4.0GHz is sitting at an idle temps of between 20-28 depending on ambient temps.

I think he's just using Core Temp mate, and typically, he's taken the huff a since I challenged him. I knew this couldn't be right. I said the exact same thing Whatsya! he is using an Amd 8550 fx 8 core.
 
Tell him to try another program like OpenHardware Monitor or OCCT.
Also tell him to check what the bios says (as Barnsley mentioned).
 
Thanks for your responses guys. He's been up in my face with his one for weeks now and I knew it was a load of bollocks. I don't think in a million years he will admit defeat so next time I go over I'm going to ninja onto his bios and get a photo.

If he were to use HWMonitor then he will get two different temps, one is for behing the CPU socket which is the most reliable for reading idle temps, the other is the core temp which works better when under load. AMD cpu's just do not read correctly when idling.

Edit : They do run so much cooler than intel CPU's though!!!!!

The idle temp reading of FX chips is borked and is not accurate. I routinely idle at 14C which is WAY below my ambient temp in my computer room. Dont know why this is but the temp reading under load is pretty accurate from what I can tell by comparing it with the motherboard's socket sensor.

So pay no attention to the idle temp but do pay attention to it under load.
 
Idle temps are always miles off, since it isn't an actual temperature probe making the reading but an algorithm instead... only good thing about this is that idle temps aren't very important.

Under load the temp readings sort themselves out, and report accurately which is a good thing since these are the readings that actually matter :)
 
I have a 8120 running at 4.01 GHz with H80 and Enermax T.B Silence fans.
Energy Saving mode (8x1.4GHz/0.8V):
- In Winter (25'C room temp) : idle 31'C , under load 58'C (performance mode)
- In Summer (~35'C room temp) : idle 36'C , under load 64'C (performance mode)

i run the 8320 oc'd to 4.2 under water with 2 custom 700mm*20mm rads and 8 120mm fans (variaty) running at 40% and using hw monitor im seeing temps at idle of 12c and full load after 12h of 42c.
 
my rads come from a condenser core from a 92 grand marques's AC system lol cut to fit 120mm fans of coarse lol they are all aluminum with brass adapters to connect to some bitfenix compression fittings. i have 5 fans one one and 3 on the other.
 
well HWMonitor gave me a real suprize and a grate example of how the idle temp sensor on the fx chips are broken lol -116c, saw that when i logged in to my rig after coming home from work.

Not broken. HWmonitor and any other software besides AMDs CCC will report the temps wrong. Must use AMDs CCC for proper readings.
